Bigger brakes for a W126?

Is it possible to upgrade the brakes on a W126? I currently have ATE power discs on the front and regular ATE discs on the rears. Also new rubber lines, Dot 4 fluid, and Textar pads all the way around.

But since my brakes are so visible through my summer wheels I think a larger set in front would look cool. More stopping power is also always a good thing. So is it possible to put larger discs and calipers on a W126?

Also are stainless braided brake lines available? Can I get them custom made?

Bigger discs on an SDL? Wow... Let's see a pic of the stock brakes through your summer wheels. Slotted rotors might be nice.

Stiffening the suspension will make a big difference in stopping power on a 126. That's next on my list.

The suspension is stiff enough already for me, I have a new set of Bilstein comforts all the way around. I just want more looks and a little more stopping power. I will try to get a pic up tomarrow.

My rims are 16in. $3k is a littler more then I want to spend on brakes, I'd rather do an intercooler upgrade. Maybe I will just add stainless lines and be done with them.

What about checking out the brake setup on a 560 SEL. If it is different from yours it might have better calipers, and it should be a bolt on.

I think they are all the same. Although the ATE calipers cost 2 1/2 times as much as the Bendix. Why so much more? Are the ATE's better?

Porsche one piece aluminum calipers

These were offered as options on 911S series, circa 1970 to 1973. Two piston ATE with larger and thicker pads than MB offers. Check on Ebay.

I will post pictures of the completed job as soon as my vented and cross drilled rotors arrive.

Lots of people paint their calipers with brightly colored epoxy paint.

I am prepared for the flame job commin my way because I too use Goodridge stainless brake lines and no backing plates. To each his own, eh?

For street use, get Porterfield R4-S pads, and maybe stainless braided lines. That will make a significant improvement, although the R4-S pads aren't cheap. I'm not sure what, if any, larger brakes will bolt on to a W126. I've heard of installing W126 brakes on to the W123 as an upgrade though.

The Movit setups are $4k+... are your pockets that deep? Might as well get the RENNtech/Brembo setup on eBay right now and fabricate custom brackets for them. Or my Brembo setup (for sale in the Parts section of this forum) and adapt them...

I would rather spend $4k on a paint job at this time, then maybe an intercooler set up.

Actually I have been wondering about those pads. Do they throw less dust? The Textar's I am running now throw tons of dust, when I use my summer wheels I need to clean them every 2-3 days. I might swap out my Textars in the front even though they have less then 10k miles on them.

That's one of the great things about the Porterfields, they are low dust and it's light colored dust. Cheapest price is, oddly enough, direct from Porterfield. Go easy on them (no full-ABS stops) for the first 3-500 miles, gradually using them harder, before you stomp on them. They need a bit of a gradual break-in. After that, stomp on 'em!

The Movit package is better suited to cars with over 400hp, or lottery winners.

Cool I wanted to replace my original front calipers anyway, I think this summer I will swap them and change the pads. All that brake dust cannot be good for the paint on my wheels!

report my emails for you all...

since i only have about 270hp on the ground and i did not win the lotto ill just keep the w123 rollin as is with drilled rotors/stainless lines

ill keep the w203 sport sedan for the crazier braking...when needed

anyway here you go!

Dear Jake,

I recieved this e-mail from the Boss at MOVIT

"560 brakes were on my car (560 sel 87 ece )
they use the same caliper and same pad, just the disc is
vented (and the caliper widened with a additional centerpiece).
they wont stop any better, the braking force is exactly the same.
that is why i did install first the 304x32 mm / 4s2 setup (15")
and later the 322 4s3 kit (17"). now the car stops as i should,
and i really use it ... autobahn with the old horse is a pleasure ..."

The 322x32 kit cost 2150 EUR.

Best Regards
/Per
