MB rated those for 250DIN HP, about 280SAE HP.

If you are looking for a more robust 5spd, you can always try and pick up a Getrag out of either a 16v or a W129 300SL. I was looking at purchasing a wrecked '91 euro 300SL 5spd to do a conversion on my '91 300E auto but decided against it for the time being. (The guy just wanted a little too much money.) Both are out there and probably as easy to find as the 300E 5spd, as only a little over a 1000 of those were ever imported.
Cheers,

isn't it harder to fit the 16V? I have both trannies available to me. I don't know which one to purchase. At first I was going to buy the 16V because it can handle insane amounts of power, but the install was going to cost a fortune. for the 300E manual it will still be cheaper than my automatic rebuild but since I want to boost it afterwards, I just want to make sure it can handle the power

My research all pointed to the install being the same for any 190E/300E manual. As I remember the biggest prob w/ getting a 2.3 tranny was you still needed to come up w/ a 2.6/3.0 manual flywheel. I could be wrong, it's been a while and my notes are not in front of me. Either way, I believe you will still have to drill the end of the crank. Do a search on w124 manual conversion or m103 5spd and various combinations of those wordings. There is a ton of info on this site and at least of few of them are from individuals who have actually done it.
Cheers,
-Matt-

16v tranny that good?

Is that so? Can a 190 2.3/2.5 16v gearbox handle more power/torque than a 'box from a manual w124 300e?

More info please. Seems to me that a 300 engine has the same amount of power and torque as a 16v engine, maybe even more.

I have heard that the 190 16v's were available with 2 different trannys: normal one and a 'sport' transmission. The 'sport' had the 1st gear LEFT UNDER.

So are the THAT good?

US 190-16v's only had what you're calling the "sport" manual transmission.

I was told US 16V's handle more than 350hp easily. even with a supercharger I only plan to get 300 hp to the crank but people are telling me the 300E manual can't handle that

Transmission Conversion

Hi guys,

Following this thread, can you tell me how much you estimate it will cost to convert my auto tranny 1993 300E (2.8) to manual transmission?
Are these manula trannies easily available? I don't plan to make any major power up-grades to my engine, just get it a bit quicker off the line to have more fun driving the car.
Thanks

The 300e trannies are NOT readily available, but you can use 190e trannies as well; I'm not sure about their torque-handling ability compared to 300e units. I'll guess at least $2500 to have a shop collect all the parts and do all the work.

The "cheapest" way to do it is buy up a wrecked 5spd (of whatever variety...a w129 or w201 may require 1 or 2 parts to be purchased from you stealership or whatever) and swap it out yourself. Or have your mechanic do it. Then sell as much as you can off the parts car (as well as your funtcional auto) to recoupe expenses. The cheapest way is rarely the easiest.

...Looking at your post again I see your looking to convert a '93...not sure if the '93 had more electric do-dads to mess w/.

Good Luck!
