Manual 'box on Merc v8's?

Is there a way to fit a manual gearbox onto a Merc v8, especially the older 380/420/500/560s?
Budget is tight...so hope there's someone here with a little known secret...

On a tight budget I would say no. It is however possible to modify a Tremec to fit, but it involves a lot of expensive issues.

If you are on a budget....nope, not even close. For what you'll spend on custom work you are better off buying something newer/faster/etc. Sorry I don't have better news. Is there a reason the automatic that comes in most of these cars doesn't work for you?

Find a racing company, that does custom bellhousings. Then a custom driveshaft, shifter, mounts, crossmembers. Not as bad as you might think. Hardest part is getting the trans. to mount the engine. might try http://www.browellbellhousing.com/

Some MB V8's came with a manual

the 3.5 V8 cars (w108, W116, R107) came with a 4 speed manual option.

Some Euro 5.0 liters V8's came with a 5 speed manual. All those parts should fit. Find a European Wrecking Yard.

$$$$$

I think the prior post is mistaken. M-B never did a manual for the later V-8's; the 3.5's are the last ones. I do know of a very unusual 500E that RennTech converted to a 6 litre and added a BMW 850CSI manual gearbox (6-speed). The bill for that alone was $20K and I can tell you from driving the car that it is unusually notchy.

If you have to have a manual, buy a used 5-series BMW (530, the small V-8 or a 540).

yes, and I finally "officially" verified this. The 280SE 3.5 was offered w/ the 4-spd and I would guess that other cars may have been as well. Since the m116 is physically the same as the m117 (exterior only) would this not be a good option? And more importantly, where could I find one of these transmissions? Are they available in the US, Canada, or just the EU market? Thanks in advance if anyone can help!
