I've deleted the rear muffler on my TE and kept the center resonator. It growls pretty deeply, enough that I don't get on it in quiet residential neighborhoods. On the highway it's not that offensive. When you take off it has a drone that crisps up pretty sharp about 3500RPM. If you live in a posh neighborhood I wouldn't recommend it, the neiighbors may start to hate you depending on how early you leave for work.

Its cool. Do you know what size the pipe is though? It sits too low for me to go under and measure the pipe, and I wnted to pull the resonator, and center muffler.
Then perhaps a tip.

I removed the center resonator on both 450 SEL 6.9 and 190 E 2.6 and found a deeper sound. No drone at highway speeds or idle. No downside that I could notice at all and particularly in the v-8, the sound to me is proper.
Interestingly to me, after the center was pulled on the 6.9 and after having driven it for awhile, I had an x-pipe grafted in as close as I could get it to the front of the car. The idea is to even out the exhaust pulses and increase scavenging. The effect was that of a small muffler. I have read and posted such, that the old hot rodders could put in a couple of crossover pipes at different locations and do without mufflers completely. |

Would it be bad to remove the resonator and clamp on a piece of pipe? I also want to remove the center muffler. Are they inline, so I can just use a straight pipe, or do I need to have some stuff bent?

In have been watching this thread with interest and picked up a few ideas for my 82 500SL euro which I am going to put into action .
My Euro has no catalitic convertor as per OEM specs , it just has the two x 2 inch pipes coming from the exhaust manifold leading to a resonator , but before the resonator right up front there is a cross over pipe which is about 2 feet wide between the two pipes coming from the exhaust manifold . This crossover is at a ninety deg angle between the two pipes . I don't know if this is standard on this model or if it was installed by a previous owner , would some one care to comment . This leads me to say, that from the resonator the twin two inch pipes run close and parallel to the rear muffler which is a twin pipe inlet and twin pipe outlet . That is 2 inches inlet 1 and three quarter inch outlet tail pipes. My intention is to remove the resonator completly and replace it with a small 45 deg crossover right at that site leaving the rest of the system as described. At present the resonator needs replacing, but I will replace with a small crossover as above, as I feel the crossover at this point will dampen sound ( not as much as the resonator ) and give a free flow of gas and a mix of gas to equalize the back pressure , and additionally give a deeper V8 sound. I will therefore have two crossovers on this system, the one up front and the new one as described . I will let you know the resulting outcome , good or bad . Any comments appreciated. That should sound good. I have an appointment today to have em look at me exhaust and see what they can do.
Duxthe1 did you just have a new piece of pipe welded on, or how did that work? I am worried about it melting the plastic on the lower bumper cover.
