You can calculate the top speed if you know the final drive ratio, top gear - gear ratio, rev limit and tire size. It's not 100% correct but gives a good idea. Here is one calculator that you can try http://www.car-videos.net/tools/speedrpm.asp


P.S. the other way is to take a gps (speedo may be of) , find a deserted/private airfield/track (naturally ) and see what speed it'll reach .

My 300TE has around 3000rpm at 100km/h, with auto tranny.

In 5-th gear with 3000 rpm my speedo showed ~ 110 km/h , thought that the speedo is optimistic so I checked it using the calculator. Turns out it's in the ballpark - 111.205 km/h / 69.1 miles atleast according to the calc. Looks like the 17" rims with 215/45 tires give quite a difference in speed compared to the stock ones - 205/55/15 or more likely my speedo was off with the sandard tires and now shows correctly. When I get a chance I'd like to verify it with the gps.

My speedo is out 10%, 110kmh is actually 100kmh. And it has stock tyres and wheels.
I've had three german cars and they've all been out by a similar amount.

Well almost every merc i have driven is off by 6% at 100, but also allmost all get more accurate as you go past 180km

Did some tests to see if I can record the engine sounds through a laptop (using a microphone mounted on the intake) while driving so I can listen for knock (through the speakers) and later on analyze the knock frequency of the engine. Good thing is it works you can hear all the engine sounds but its a bit noisy. I obtained a BMW knock sensor and when I have time I'll mounted it on the block and see if I can get a clearer sound from it, later I intend to link it to the megasquirt and have it pull timing if there is knock. To actually setup the knock sensor I indend to introduce knock at low load and setup megasquirt to trigger I'll also record it in order to see at what frequency it's for this engine.

Finally bought a timing light and solved the ignition advance problem. Now I have stable ignition timing which when locked at a given value (say 12 degs) holds that value and doesn't add timing like it did before. Problem now is that the car feels a lot slower than before. I have the feeling that the car now on full throttle is slower than before on 1/2 throttle. I'm basing this on the fact that car run with a lot more ignition advance before ( because it was adding timing ). I had to add 7 degs to the whole timing map just to get it to run ok . Anyway I'm happy that I solved that problem now when I have time I'll port the exhaust turbine housing (bypass port) to see if it'll solve my boost creep problem, if not I'll convert to an external wastegate which is a bit more work. Hope to solve it sometime these days so I can attend the open drag day which is this coming Sunday

Problem is that I don't know at what ignition advance it was running since it was adding advance as the rpms climbed (when ignition was locked at a given angle). Anyway to get it to run well off boost I ended up with the following table ->



However it still feels underpowered in boost compared to before, keep in mind that this table is not tuned, I ended up with it by adding 7 degs advance to the whole table.

After porting the wastegate port on the turbine housing from 17mm to 25mm I've finally solved the boostcreep problem.

Haven't had a lot of time to work on the car these days, only new thing is that I upgraded the megasquirt v2.2 to run megasquirt 2 code (ms2 extra) with a MS-2 processor daughter board. The upgrade was very easy, just take out the processor, put in the daughter board and port the tune files (msq-s ). Over all a very good upgrade, now the engine runs a lot smoother than before.

when i tuned my ignition table, i found a 3d representation of the mercedes ignition map on line, and it had a rather pronounced spike at around 60 kpa and, if i remember correctly, in the 3000-4000 area, my lap top is broken at the minuet, so i cant use my memory stick to show you what i mean exctly, but when i copyed this spike into my map, the drivability off boost improved massivly.

off the top of my head, you should be looking to pull 1 degree of timing for every psi that you add. so tune off boost for max drivablity, then just remove 1 psi for every 14 kpa you have on the left of your table.

Nick, that's exactly what I've done right from the beginning, except that I retard 1 deg for 0.1 bars which is very close to what you said. Problem was in the ignition settings (inverted/not inverted). Now the car is awesome to drive, very smooth and lots of power. Good point about the spike, can you post the map when you get a chance to use your memory stick ?

P.S. The above map was just to get the car running well after experimenting with various ignitor settings.

i cant find the dam memory stick! its vanished. i've just tried to find the picture on line, no luck i'm affraid. if you wait till your nocksence is fully working, you could make the changes safely by "Gessing" the spike area.

i am watching your progress with interest, i want to use it as well, and am waiting for you to confirm the frequency and success rate, i was talking with a guy on the ms forum who had tryed it, but gave up due to his engine being too "noisy" for him to identify the knock sound propperly, ms was pulling timing all over the place.

if your car isnt shiny, you dont know what you are talking about, remember; paint shine = knowledge. In order to be taken seriously, you should spend all your money on paint, (and get a dyno reading).
