Did Brabus tune a version of the 140?? You might be able to get drawings, parts, etc from them...

You maybe right about part of it...

THe W140 case *IS* the same... the difference is the rear cover. The W126 is definately different beast. R129/W140/W124 V8's all over 200Ft-lbs of torque have the same size case.

Now, ASR wise.. that maybe your big hicup. I can tell you as a non-asr owner of a W124 whom has a 2.82 rear end out of a W140- I know what's I talk about=0) It has not been converted to LSD YET.
But yep- DaveM is the man for LSD information.

I have the two of them apart in my garage side by side. They are two completely different animals. The 140 case is about 1 inch wider and uses 1.4 liters instead of 1.3.

John,

Well- it worked like a charm for me:

This is what I used... Are you not swapping the rear covers? What model and year W140 are you putting this in....

You never answered my question: Does your car have ASR?

Michael

My bad... you've got a 600!

As I put the caveat in my previous posting... true for all *V8's.

Your 94 400E uses a 129 housing P/N 129 351 04 05 or 140 351 05 05

I have a 1996 SL600 diff with a P/N 140 351 04 05 housing

Cover from 1986 560SL (late 126 diff) will physically not fit. It's about 1" narrower.

The 1996 SL600 has about 400 ft-Lb torque

Just to clarify.... the 1.3L housing with 210mm gears was used in the W124 and R129 chassis, along with some W140 applications (such as the S350 diesel). These are easy (well, relatively!) to convert to LSD if the existing gear ratio is between 2.47-3.06.

However, the 1.4L housing is the "reinforced" 210mm... different case, carrier, gears, everything. Ron is dealing with the reinforced setup, which was used behind the M120 engine, and also some M119/W140 combos. Additional info is in this PDF file. There is also an even larger 1.6L housing used on the late R129 but I don't have any details on that.

Ron, this may be a stupid question, or perhaps you've already been down this road... but how about sending the W140 reinforced carrier to Quaife and having them whip up a custom LSD for you? I know it wouldn't be cheap, but if your time and R&D is worth anything, it may not be much worse than trying to develop a one-off proprietary LSD. If not Quaife, perhaps a different LSD mfr? There has to be some racing specialty shops who could do this. Quaife has a lifetime warranty and no clutches to wear out, which is why they'd be my first choice.

I did talk to Quaife. They said the diden't make anything for my diff. They never offered me the option of having anything custom done. I bought a spare diff for the time being so I can put the car back together possibly with phantom grip blocks while I experiment down other avenues. I did find one other diff builder in Europe that was talking $2500 for there off the shelf MB units. Custom units could be built for other MB but I would assume in the $3500+ range.

gsxr 02-05-2010 10:56 AM

I believe Quaife will build anything you want, if you'll pay for it. :D Did you talk with Quaife UK, or one of their distributors here in the US? I believe you'd need to talk directly with the mother ship to get any real assistance. I would fully expect it to be in the $3-$5k range. Again, a solution that doesn't have wear parts (clutches) is still quite enticing. But yeah, the cost does get a little painful.

Well the carrier is on its way to Phantom Grip and the car should be back on the road in about 3 weeks. We will see how this works out. still working on a clutch type solution but this will get me going for the season. Does anyone have any recommended gear lube to use with the phantom grip.

75w-90 with a friction modifier additive(keeps wear to the LSD block minimal) if your not always beating on the diff but still having fun in it more often than not.

75w-140 with a fricition modifier additive if your beating the living piss out of the diff everyday of it's wretched existence, leaving it shouting obscenities at the end of a long day of tire boiling doughnuts, brake torquing launches and VHT prepped drag racing.

Usually Redline synthetic oils(which are available at Autozone, Advanced Auto Parts, etc.) will have the additive in them already. They are so slippery infact that they have been known to ruin manual transmissions because they don't allow the syncros to work properly.

According to this paper (published by Amsoil) Amsoil is the way to go.
