As for my progress no. I have bell housings for 61X, 60X, and a couple for the gas V8s. I also have a line on a nice 265 and possibly a T5 to mate to them, and I have a good ruff picture in my head how it will go together, but I currently can not afford to put one together only to have it sit, and the set up would be too expensive from what feed back I have seen.

I sold my 300DT that I converted to a 4 speed, and if I come across another one I would use a 265 trans.

Is the 3.5 bellhousing currently available?

I haven't put together an assembly yet. I have it flushed out in my head and have taken lots of measurements to be sure things will fit for my applications, should I acquire one that is, but I am too busy to put one together just to say it can be done.

There were a couple of folks who inquired about their applications, but they seemed to have stalled in the logistics stage.

It will be a pricey proposition based on how many parts you have and need to get. I think one gentleman and I came up with a cost of around $3,000.00 to $3,500.00 for a complete conversion from an automatic to a 5-Speed, (Getrag or other trans).

Bellhousing

Well for the M119 youncan use the separable bellhousing from the W210 420/50E cost about 300 Euros. in front it fits perfekt to the M119, rear is centerd withe the original hole. Getrag 265, Subaru or T5 could fit, perhaps getrag with BMW clutch is the easiest fit. Mechanically nearly resolved but there are minor elektronic problems with th LH-jetronik in th 500 E (Automatik-start-stop-kick-down). Flywheel had to be a 32cm with M119 rim and trigger, and 240mm clutch center alla m116980.

Do you have a part number for that bell housing?

There has not been any serious reason to invest money and metal, (don't need another expensive part gathering dust on the shelf). I don't have an application at the moment, so I have not done anything for myself either. Actually, I Just put the Bell Housings I have in the attic,.....found one that I need to try to return to a gentleman in New York, I think.

The bell housing is just one part that needs to be fabricated. A flywheel, shifter, drive shaft, etc., needs to be made that will work with the car, and as one of the members here found, there is not much room in the tunnel which limits the type of trans used.

I am interested in working with anyone to build something, but it would be an one off, not a kit, plus I would need some specific and accurate measurements of the engine to build a mock up here.

Just saw this post in the parts section, (no connection to me), Getrag 265 (5-speed manual). Would be a nice choice for a conversion.

I'm the dude in NY. I lost track of this thread.

From what I played with in the past, the two speed bumps for doing a swap are certainly the bell-housing and the flywheel+ring gear. The labor involved in machining a very large blank of steel into a usable flywheel seems to just be too much.

Hay, PM me your address and I will send the housing back.

As for flywheels, there are many "blanks" out there, made by companies with out crank bolt holes. Even the ring gear seat on the flywheel can be cut down to accept the MB gear.

IMOP the tuff part is getting the shifter to work in the MB location, as well as stuffing a trans in the tunnel.

Here's a firm order...

Get me a flywheel and suitable bellhousing to put a BMW 5-speed on the back of an M117 alloy block.

I'll put it into a 380slc.

You have to specify which M117 as they are three bolt patterns: the iron block, the very early alloy block and the later alloy block. I guess you want a bellhousing that will fit the later and most common alloy block. As per the BMW 5-speed I guess you're talking about the Getrag 265 with detacheable bellhousing.

I think the easiest is to cut the bellhousing out of a shot MB auto trans and weld it to the back cut off of a BMW bellhousing.
