500E strange problem makes fun for a moment

Happy New Years Everybody!
It's been a long time since I've posted....sorry for the neglect to the board!

Here's the good news: I've finally figured out how to do a really cool smokie burnout with my 500E and really stop on a dime. Really impressive, huh?

But its the bad news that made it happen. The symptoms...abs and asr lights on dash light up, gages dead except clock and turn indicators plus warning lights. Strange whining/buzzing motor sound from inside the dash. No ASR, ABS, or charcol filter, snow chain switch action, and the climate control vents seem off somehow, though the a/c and heat work fine.

Has anyone with a 500E had this happen to them? It runs great, and is really fun to finally not have that ASR always kicking in, and I think the breaks are better without ABS at least in the dry, but I am a little worried about getting too many tickets with out the speedo working.

The only other thing that probably is not related is the right inside fender plastic wall came undone and was rubbing on the wheel. Don't think its related, but perhaps it knocked out an ABS sensor or wire?

I'll be of course taking it in to the dealer, but any info will help in advance in case they tell me I need a whole new computer wiring etc.

Thanks,
Eric H

p.s. I got my 1st gear start installed and its really cool, plus I have my Renntech sway bar sitting for enough time and good weather to install.

Eric H.,
haven't experienced any of that, even with ASR off (homebrew unit).

Who did your 1st gear start?

Is it the "valve modification" or the electronic Winter/Summer switch modification?

Best of luck,
:-) neil

Hi,

The first gear start came from Renntech and I had it installed locally at Peter Schmidt Transmissions.

Hi EricH- keep us posted on the fix(es) on your E500.

By the way, what dealer is it going to?

Without a doubt, you have a fuse or fuses blown somewhere! I would replace all of the fuses in the fuse box with new!!!

question for benzmac

Thanks Benzmac,

I checked the box by the drivers side firewall for blown fuse but didn't see any. The gages came back on once while i was driving but then were dead again on restart. This happened twice, so it makes me think its not a fuse but a connector/wiring type of thing.

Any other ideas?

Eric

fad - I still haven't gotten it in to a dealer yet. Tried to make an appointment for the STead motors in Walnut Creek but no time available in this millenium. Maybe I will try Broadway Mercedes again. Any good dealer recommendations?

Hi EricH-

I've recently started bringing my E500 and E320 Coupe to Smythe European in San Jose.

After 5 experiences- all have been stellar: service/tech expertise and care included. You'll get an appointment to drive up for drop off, expresso & donuts in the morning, usually a free loaner car, and they provide your car a bath too upon return (I ask to skip this though).

My Service Advisor is Paul Werner 408-345-2209. He is a great fellow- honest and listens great- and usually gets me in right away with my car is back the next day or same day. He keeps me fully informed as to progress and findings. One week I had both the E320 Coupe in and the E500 in and both came back that afternoon- repairs completed- no problemo whatsoever.

Group specialist is the BEST..I have been bringing my E55 and E500 to Ken since he opened Group Specialist a few months ago. My E500 is actually there...replacing the Starter and Ignition stuff. He also provides you a car to use. All his guys are from Autobahn..everytime I go there..there is a new guy from AutoBahn. :D
