3.92 diff on an auto?

hi

is it a bad idea to have a 3.92 diff with an auto gearbox?

i noticed that the lowest ratio( highest numerically) diff that MB used with their auto gearboxes was the 3.58. im guessing this is for longevity reasons.

3.69 came on the S320's W140 chassis.

MB avoided the lower ratios for longevity and fuel economy reasons. It wasn't always so. I had a 76 230 that had a gas 4 cyl, auto, and 3.92 gears. I hated it. The engine was always revving way too high on the highway.

My 1971 280SL W113 has the standard 4.08 gear..no problems and it sounds like a roadster should at speed !!!
The last of the 280SL production run did have a 3.92 gear,
