Thanks for th pic tkd_M119 - I was actually poking around under the hood the other day before doing the brakes and saw this little guy by accident! I'll pull mine tonight and see what my beast acts like
I'm going to cover mine with a spot of electrician's tape for now, while I determine if this is a worthwhile mod for me. Hey what year/car is your M119 car? There was some allusion ealier in the thread that only non-computer-controlled-knock car (i.e. earlier W124's) would benefit from this resitors removal. Mine, being a '95 definitely isn't an older one, and I'm wondering what differences/downfalls there would be to doing this to a newer car. Regards, - Ryan

Dieseldude - I have a 92 400e. It now feels a bit more responsive off the line but I don't know how much of that is in my head! I'm hoping to glean a few more MPGs but so far it's not looking as if I will be. I'm thinking of putting it back in next week to see if I feel a difference. I think the later M119s like yours have better programing in the ECU. What kind of MPGs do you get? I'm only averaging around 15 MPG (combined city 70%/highway30%).

I'm getting 19-21mpg in mixed driving which is pretty decent considering the motor's displacement and performance. If I can get an open stretch of road and set the cruise at 70-80mph, I've got as good at 26mpg(!)
If removal of this relay can increase my fuel consumption. I'd be thrilled! But I'm thinking that's unlikely Regards, - Ryan

:p thanks sixto! Funny how substituting the word 'consumption' with 'efficiency' can totally alter that statement's meaning....
To clarify: If removal of this relay can increase my fuel efficiency. I'd be thrilled! Regards, - Ryan

reply from Hartmut Feyhl (President of RENNtech)
I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but...
(I don't think I'm going to try this "mod," if Mr. Feyhl disapproves...) -----Original Message----- From: Hartmut Feyhl Sent: Wednesday, October 16, 2002 2:02 PM To: 'Scott M. Shell' Subject: RE: W124 M119 motor question Not so easy, sorry. There are many different models and even much more different part#’s for the ignition system (EZL) and every unit works different and the resistors have a different meaning. In most cases, position # 7 is diagnostic mode, on other units it’s reversed, on other units only 3 positions work and on some units it doesn’t work at all. On those really old models where it does work it can overheat the catalytic converter and destroy it. That is the real reason why Mercedes has on cars equipped with cats a fixed resistor in every country. They were concerned for their cats, not the quality of the fuel. M119 engines with LH or KE usually have 2400 ohm with cats and either 220 or 470 ohm without cat ( depending on control unit ). If you want to risk your cats you can try it. The difference is maybe 2 hp and not noticeable. Hartmut -----Original Message----- From: Scott M. Shell Sent: Wednesday, October 16, 2002 2:59 PM To: Bob Brady (RENNtech) Subject: W124 M119 motor question Importance: High Good afternoon, Bob. I have a W124 M119 motor question, please. What is RENNtech's opinion, please, regarding the replacement of the stock (fixed, 750 ohm) R16/1 resistor with a (European specification) R16/1 resistor (*adjustable* from 0 ohm - 2.4 Kohm)? What are the risks of performing this "poor man's mod," if any? This thread came up in my search engine, introducing me to this forum, and I am happy to be here! As tasty as it sounds, and it did spark my intrest, we must remember "no free lunch". My MBZ Shop owner, and good friend for 27 yrs, reminded me about the clean windsheild and shiney hood after a service.....the car runs better! And then the story of the diesel customer that loved the fuel additive he had tried, ordered a case of it......next service came in and told awesome stories about how well his car runs now, only to find out....the case was full, they forgot to put it in. I found my resistor easily from the great pictures here, we pulled it......no real change.....no big deal. It is nice to read about the theory behind it......even if you spend a lot of $$$$ to put down some serious HP to the rear wheels, in most cases one would only improve your 1/4 mile time by about 1 or 2 tenths of a second. I am from the old school, HP = Cubic Inches + Compression.....in the new world order, Technolegey has kicked in and the MBZ from the 90's does the job, the chips.....no real help, other mods.....look good.....stickers?......LOL!
So, no more 103 octaine fuel, no more compression, but hey these newer cars are 10:1, have ok fuel systems, nice computers that still work after 10 years.....I say enjoy them and don't f@*# with mother nature! I love My 300CE with the 104 motor, humm...love my 280 4.5 as well....would not trade these cars for anything! Well, maybe a 1968 Hemi Dodge Charger, as clean as mine! This forum is the best, and I hope I can add some input for a old guy, and yes I do go fast from time to time, only when it's safe! Don't try this at home!

If you have read the posts here, this mod has been proven to work on M103 motors. No one said this will work on a M104 motor so your comments have no bearing on what whas originally posted.
This is not a "snake oil" type of modification as you imply, while the gains are not large or especially noticebale on higher hp motors, on the lower hp motors the differences are noticable. This has been proven by me, before I originally posted this thread on another forum, the thread ended up here by someone kindly enough to copy and post it here. I |

My car always runs better after a good wash!
I do believe I will be seeing an increase in MPG. I'll post the results in a few days. I am a bit concerned about the cat issue. |
