Very good news. I still have it back in on my car.

Glad to hear you give it the OK Benzmac.

I want to do the dist cap and rotor before I go for it again and also run some injector cleaner. and even some octane booster to see if there is a difference.

I was thinking of trying to get my friend in germany to source me a euro R17 switch.

Benzmac are you sure about the 16v, mine pulls hard all the way to 7000 rpm and a haven't done the mod yet. Actually it pulls the hardest form 5000 to 7000 RPM.
I can feel the difference when the rev get to 5000 rpm it is noticable on my car. At first when I bought it I thought that it had some kind of system simular to the vtec on hondas which comes on at 5000Rpm but it doesn't. Don't get me wrong it pulls hard to 5000rpm but at 5000rpm - 7000rpm it pull even harder and you can feel the difference. Isn't the power band of the 16v from 5000RPM to around 7000RPM ?

Ok time out I was wrong . Just saw a post which said that the S - position on the euro EZL switch is equal to the removal of the R16 resistor on US models. Mine was set on S which meens that I have the mod . But why can I feel the transition between rpm lower than 5000rpm and when I reach the 5000 rpm mark ? Is there something wrong with my car ?

Ashman: I read your sig correctly, that is where I gleaned the info about your future performance upgrades. I hope you understood the point I was trying to get at, anyway at this late in the thread, you can see the positive comments from some of the more experienced MB mechanics so I hope your fears have been put to rest.

BTW, I am the originator of this thread, but it was originally posted on Benzsport.com, someone transferred it to this forum and did not post who the originator was.

2phast,

I do like the mod, but based on my dist cap and rotor needing to be replaced. I think it would be best to leave it in until that is fixed.

My mech I trust, but I do what I want to my car anyway.

But when it comes to diagnostics, he is one of the best, even over the phone being described the problems.

I plan on doing lots of upgrades ot the car. stock is boring to me, while still great. Modified is Fun, and more of a personalized thing.

I tend to like to make my cars a little different thant he rest.

Ohh I saw a 300Ce yesterday, decked, 17" Rims, AMG kit, exhaust, euros, slammed. Looked killer. It looked pretty much how I want my car to look, apart from the slammed part. I want my car lower but not slammed and thats just the effect I have.

Smile removing retard from engine

i have been looking all over the engine campartment for the resistor that retards engine spark in my 84 190E. can't find it. i have a manual and it shows it under the aircleaner by the valve cover. still no luck. have looked behind battery and by the brake resevoir. all the same results. anyone have any suggestions where i can find this resistor on this car. 1984 190E 2.3 8v

thanks a bunch

Pinging, also known as knocking , is preignition. Preignition can be caused by heat, high compression and lean mixture. preignition could occur with the R-16 removed becuse it advances the timing thus causes higher compression in the head which in turn may cause the fuel to preignite before the sparkplug is able to.

The R-16 resistor on your 300E is located next to the break master cyl, straped on the air conditioning supply hose. Its a black plastic, rectangular shaped object with a ( i beleve) a green and a brown wire connecting to it. Remove the device from the zip tie, remove the electrical tape and pull the sucker out! not the wires! but the plug.
Good Luck,
Adam

OK,,,, Well, Its located drivers side, same area as the fuse box, almost against the inside of the firewall. You will see a metal hose with a foam type insulation around it. Attached to the hose will be the R-16 resistor. it has a large black zip tie holding it to the hose.
This is the pic of the R-16 resistor removed from my car. other than this there is a black receptical of the same size it plugs into(the size of a dime).

You won't achieve 0 retard from this mod. I heard its only good for a 2 degree difference. Ill check with a timing light one day. If you here pinging or knocking replace the resistor until you either increase the octane or adjust it properly with a different value resistor. You shouldn't have any problens though.
Hope this helps,
Adam

preignition is different than spark knock or knock. preignition is caused by something other than the spark igniting the mixture. usually it is just a hot metal area that causes the high compression mixture to ignite. basically the compression just gets too high and the mixture autoignites before the spark fires. preignition is unrelated to spark timing. spark knock, or just knock, is when the plug fires and the compressed mixture explodes all at once instead of a smooth slow burn like it should be. both preignition and spark knock are called detonation by many people but some people only equate detonation to preigition and not spark knock. both problems are related to compression that is too high. with and advanced timing, the plug fires too far BTDC which leads to the mixture actually burning at max compression which is TDC. instead of the smooth burn the high compression leads to an explosion and you hear a ping or knock. preignition is a problem you run into with a lean mixture or compression ratio or effective compression ratio on forced induction engines that is too high for the octane rating of the fuel. knock happens with timing advanced too far for the octane rating of the fuel.
