M104 3.4 AMG on Dyno, with and without timing trick.
I guess most of forum members know the car already, its a 1991 W124 3.4 AMG (M104 engine) cis injection.
Feeling the car running pretty good lately, I decided its time to put it on Dyno and see what it gives, a run on stock setup and a run with the famous timing/resistor trick. Forum member Jayrash, took the car to the dyno and did the timing trick, I am sure he will post the details about the Dyno type and the timing trick method he used. All I know for now is that those dyno runs were made with 20% loss. I will post a better picture of the dyno result, but for now its all I got. And here is the original Dyno graph supplied in the car catalogue...original power should be 200kw (268 bhp) and If im not mistaken 330 torques Last edited by Chlippo; 02-05-2014 at 07:36 PM. |

If AMG rated at the crankshaft, which my understanding BHP implies you are measuring at the engine, so no driveline loss.
And if your dyno was at the rear wheels and you put down 222/224HP. The 330 torque rating is in NM at the crank which is 243 FT/LBs, you put down 215FT/LBs at the wheels. Those are pretty strong numbers. Like 12-16% driveline losses, and the car is 23 years old. More knowledgeable members who are better at analyzing those graphs will chime in, but the way I see it those are great numbers. Thanks for posting! Always nice to see real dyno sheets.

As for the timing trick, well I have done that trick on many mercs, and I have seen varied results. some respond sweetly others mildly, but chlippos car got worse and the graphs show it. the run making the most hp but less trq is with the trick. and I could feel the drop in trq midrange before even reaching the dyno.

What's with the check mark on the black line? Is the dyno an acceleration or load type?

Is there any source for torque and HP curves for the 116, 117 engines stock from factory?

Thanks for posting these dyno results Chlippo!

I've said this before but I'll say it again: I believe a change occurred when MB switched from CIS-E III to CIS-E V in 1990 on the W124s. The end result of that change being that the resistor mod doesn't give the same desirable result that it gives on the pre-90. At the time I made my statement it was just a theory of mine, but now that I have a generation "V" W124 myself, and after having pulled it's resistor, I can say with a little more confidence that "V" generation cars don't seem to like having their resistors removed. I still remain convinced that all pre-90 "III" generation W124s love it though. My two pre-90 W124s certainly do! Regards, Eric

That would perhaps be correct for N.Am vehicles.
the 3.4CE 124.051 should be tuned for EU spec though. Do you have a fixed R16 or do you have the adjustable resistor?

Fixed R16 just like you Aussies do.

But what you can do are setting a resistor equal to non kat cars that will give it more power as it's more agresive setup to 98 octane instead of the 95 octane as the cat versions uses. I know the thread is old. But I found this update valuable Sendt fra min LON-L29 med Tapatalk |
