Benzmac's 190E 2.3 16v TURBO !

I just posted pics of Donnie's 190E 2.3 16V Turbo he's been working on. This is one wicked machine!

Check out the Pics here.

As I said in my other post, that is one of the most beautiful things I have ever seen. I know Benzmac will enjoy it. I hope he remembers how he did it so I can get it done in a few years too.

Crap...that sounds like its pretty fast!

Jim Villers 10-31-2002 08:13 AM

Donnie ... Beautiful job. What have you don the engine internals? What pistons and compression are you running? Who manufactured your radiator?

I use the same VDO boost gauge and added an Auto Meter fuel/air ratio gauge where the voltage meter is located.

Benzmac 10-31-2002 09:15 AM

Stock internals with the 9.7:1 compresson.

The key is to control the combustion process and NOT have knock.

Boost is a wonderful thing!

Now if I can find a clutch to hold it.

Speedtek 11-01-2002 01:59 PM

NO PING! NO DING! detonation is NASTY!

I could recommend a few clutch shops that do custom work.
What are you using now?

Benzmac 11-01-2002 07:41 PM

Just ordered a special multi-material friction disc and new pressure plate and bearings. I also have to replace synchro for gear #4 while there.

For Sale

Hey Donnie,

Are you going to sell that 190 Turbo?

Any idea what the project cost would be for the second one?

Is this an unpgrade you can now offer for everyone?

Dave

Bill and Donnie,

When are you guys going to aquire and low $$ 500E and put some twin turbo's to it. If you can get 400HP +- from 2.3 liters, 5.0 should surely yield 800hp+-, right???:D

Some custom 8.0 - 8.5 C/R forged pistons, rods, a new brain, and a Mack truck cooling system should do the job.

Now a car like that might even be enough for Lee Scheeler to come back and stay here at MercedesShop.

Dan16V 11-03-2002 04:34 PM

Looks awesome, Benzmac!!! That car must be FAST!! Will you take 'er to the track any time soon?
Could you give us more info on the exhaust manifold? It looks great! Was it completely made from scratch? Could you post a few more pics?

Later,

Great job. Your work is very impressive, to say the least. I am working my 190 2.6 right now. I have my M104 3.2L short block in the machine shop right now. Stock internals with prepped rods and polished crank. The turbo is due in tomorrow. I went with a Garrett T04B. I am running a manual Sportline W124 tranny.

Did you find the 3.27 to be ok gearing? I am thinking a locked 3.47 or 3.67, but it will probably be too much with the turbo straight 6. I would have to do away with the ABS too. What do ya think.

Again , great job!

Benzmac 11-04-2002 09:00 PM

Honestly, the gearing is a little short with the stock differential. That is Ok if you don't mind shifting the gears in 2 second intervals.

The car revs and accelerates THAT fast. Anyway, take some pics and post them on the board.

Also, whatever you do, stud the block where the head bolts go in.

I took the head back off just to do that. I think it was floating a little with the stock head bolts.

mbracer 11-04-2002 09:50 PM

Thanks for the heads up! I wanted to stud the block, but I wasn't sure if was necessay. What about the mains? Rods? I was looking at ARP. Do you have other suggestions? The Mercedes' rod stretch bolts are suppose to be pretty good.

I'll post as soon as I can. I haven't seen my car in a couple of weeks. I glad to hear there is enough gear. Did you lock your rear or add clutches to increase your slip/torque split ratio. Stock is about 40-50% if I remember correctly.

I'll be running the higher compression also like you have done. I planned on the higher compression in selecting the turbine, the compression will spin it up fast and the larger size won't dye at speed. I'll be running high volume low pressure boost. About 5psi daily, and 10psi on track days. I have access to 100+ octane race gas at the pump here in Orlando since Speed World is down the street. $4.00 gal, ouch!

I'll keep you posted...
