E60 AMG airbox … 500E airbox COMMENTS!!

500E/E500 Owners:

The E60 AMG and SL60 AMG were fitted with AMG airbox (a slightly larger volume), which produces better performance than the OEM airbox that comes in our 500E’s.

Has any 500E/E500 owner tried to replace the OEM airbox with an E60 AMG - SL60 AMG airbox? Would this replacement result in a better performance for our cars?

And, for what I understand, you can get the AMG E60 air box “the entire air box only” … would the lower part of the airbox fit into the metal receiver’s of the 500E's? ... Like the OEM airbox!!

Has anyone in the forum has any information on this subject?

Please your comments…

Thanks,

Ricardo

Would they fit?

This is how the E500/500E engine bay looks like:

If you notice, the pic you posted (which is of an SL I believe) has the firewall behind the shock towers. To the rear of the airbox is that round gizmo with all those metal tubes sticking out from it. The airbox in your pic continues past it, with sort of "extensions."

I'm afraid the rear extension might not clear the firewall of the E500/500E, which has the firewall beginning forward of the shock towers. This may sugges that there is less space to work with. Besides, the engine bay of the W124 is shorter than that of the SL, isn't it?

Best way to find out is to get the measurements of the prospective airbox and compare them to yours.

Or you can always email MB in Germany. They'll probably reply in, say, oh, 10 years...

Hope that helps.

Rain,

That "that round gizmo with all those metal tubes sticking out from it" is the old CIS module. :) I don't think it's so much a case of the airbox having 'extensions' as it is that the center part of the airbox has been 'notched out', if you will, to accomodate the CIS.

It's tough to tell because of the different perspectives in the pics, but i suspect that the differences in the AMG box are largely internal.

though, to be entirely honest, aside from the spiffy AMG lettering on the airbox "I can't see a difference. Can you see a difference?" :D

Looks the same to me. In fact the 500E without the notch looks bigger. Maybe its the picture or maybe internally they are different.

Ricardo,

From everything I've read about our cars I believe the 500E Air Intake supplies more than enough air into the car in its stock form.

I believe the only improvement is reallly to develop a ram air type system similar to what Guido and Michael have done.

It sure does look cool though!:)

Placo is absolutely correct:

When they designed the 500E they took the performance to its limits. granted, some concessions were still made to keep the car a comfortable car to live with, however, the balance struck by MB and Porsche with this particular car is phenominal.

Yes, you can get more out of it, but that usually involves a considerable amount of cash and comprimising the comfort level of the car.

IMHO, taking into account more than just performance numbers but also considering drivability, reliability, liveability and fun factor as well as exclusivity and cost of ownership, for a car that's straight out of the box, bone stock, you'll find VERY few dual purpose cars of the same era that will ever match, and even fewer that will surpass, the 500E.

'Nuff said. :D

On the E60 (500E AMG prepped), the airbox volume was increased to to increase airflow for the 6.0l motor.

The item will directly bolt onto the 500E US version. As for what kind of performance increase you could expect, that I do not know.

I do know that the E50's airbox is a direct bolt on to the E420 and yields a pretty good performance increase. Those air box's can be picked up from German Ebay for under $200

Only a back to back dyno comparo would answer that question. Anyone with the resources?

Its not impossible to ship, just expensive and the seller is too lazy to box it up and take it to the German post. Keep looking.

omegabenz 02-10-2003 01:45 PM

2phast, yeah thats what I thought because I buy stuff from germany all the time. Too bad hes lazy, that would be cool to have for over here. I bet on ebay in america you could get 200 dollars for it because those carbon fiber places charge 400-500 for a core charge on a regular air box.

I was interested in pruchasing that exact airbox for my E500 at one point but I was told it wouldn't fit.

The seller told me that it didn't fit his 400 because of the opening on the underside didn't match up.

He also told me that it is no bigger then the stock 500E/E500 airbox.

I don't think he was lying to me or intentionally tried to lie to me because I was purchasing something else from him, that he was shipping to me anyway. Plus he was pretty knowledgable about things as he is looking to purchase Bergwerks 1st gear start for his car and he is all the way in Germany.
