Austin (Omegabenz) sent me a copy of a 1992 article on the Renntech E600 conversion. Interestingly, Fehyl suggested their best launches were obtained by activating the "snow chain" switch which disables the ASR until about 20mph.

I've tried it out, starting from 1st gear, and it does allow a few seconds of wheelspin before everything hooks up. Strangely, when I looked in the rearview mirror, traffic was waaaaaay behind!

ASR on-track

Made a HUMONGOUS difference. I just spent the day at Lime Rock, and my car is SOOOOOO much more track-able with ASR asleep. Made for a really great day! Too bad I was in the fastest run group, since I spent much of my time pointing people by!

I'm going to try and slip a 1997 C36 in with all of you 500E guys... I'm still stuck on the different versions of the ASR/ABS/CAN control modules... black box... whatever you want to call them. I have a detailed skematic of my C36's, and the three pins (25, 35, 37)referenced by both RennTech and all of those who've defeated ASR, make NO sense. But that is on my "newer/different" ASR box... I assume? Even so does anyone know what the 3 pins (25, 35, 37) reference on the 500E ASR box? If so I can try and find the corresponding functional pins on mine, then share it with the world - FOR FREE!!! I JUST WANT TO HAVE CONTROL OF MY DAMN CAR!!! Sorry for the rant and rave - I just really want to lose the "nanny". As always any help is greatly appreciated...

Michael, Can you take a picture of the pins and post them. I'd like to do this process. I have a line on a shop here (2 actually) that can hook me up with a switch and tie all this stuff together. Both are race shops, One porsche and the other Viper. A picture of which pins and an explanation of what I want and I'm sure these guys can get the job done

Hi guys, just been listening in on this conversations. On my 1991 500SL do the same instructions apply? From what I understand after accessing my ASR module I should somehow disengage wires 25, 35, and 37.

Also, I am good at wiring stuff, etc, but dont have much real knowledge of electronics, ie: I am a good monkey. I am assuming that the 3 relays you attach to each wire then attach those 3 relays to one switch that turns on/off the whole shebang, correct? If someone can suggest specifically which relays to buy from radio shack.

But the most important question is would this work on a 1991 500SL?

Wiring procedure - ASR defeat

There is no reason to need 3 seperate relays for this set up. a single 12vdc, 3 pole relay will do the job perfectly. Route the circuts (wires) for each of the 3 pins - 25, 35, 37, through the Normally Closed (NC) contacts of the relay, and an external switch of your liking to the coil off of a "hot" ignition switched source, flip the switch - energize relay- break the 3 circuts and you'll have your "ASR Off Switch" with one relay - not three. A 12vdc 3 pole relay may be a little trickey to find but they are out there, usually a larger electronics distributor will have them. Good luck - and if any can verify exactly what pins 25, 35, 37 actually do and share that here it would be great...

I'm still trying to figure out (for the C36ers out there) what those wires do - I'll advise when and if I find out.

Aldedmon, I can take a few pictures when I take the box back apart (to do a switch) but read my earlier detailed post and go pull your ASR module-you'll assuredly see what I mean

I think a triple-pole, triple-throw relay may be hard to find - if they exist in small packages for 12V operation. But yes that would be perfect if you could find one. However I would try if at all possible to get a stock-looking switch in the dash, above the pushbutton unit. Either replace an existing switch or buy a new burl panel with an extra hold (or risk Dremeling a new hole in your existing wood). Another option would be to disable the rear-window "child" switch in the console, and make that be the ASR defeat switch. I like hidden/clean mods that aren't too obvious. But this is definitely something I'd plan on adding, especially since it's practically free...!

asr defeat switch

Has anyone else tried this? After a couple of months of use has there been any problems? Does anyone know where to get the three pole factory looking switch? I really want to try this on a 1994 sl500 to go with the first gear start. Any suggestions or help is appreciated. Thanks Dairel

Still working on it...

Since my last post to this thread I've purchased an "ASR off" switch from a '95 S500, and await its receipt. I've also found a 4 pole relay that'll get the job done - with considerable guidance from the good Mr. Forgione, I contacted GlobalSpec.com and was able to I.D. a suitable-appearing relay. I then identified a supplier (Newark In One - www.newark.com) and gave them a call. They actually suggested a slightly different relay that's best suited to what we're trying to do - their P/N 18C1638. Since there likely isn't a whole lot of current running through these wires, the sales guy pushed me into this 4 pole relay with bifurcated connections (whatever they are!) for under $20 with shipping.

My plan is to run a six wire harness from the CAN to the relay in the passenger compartment somewhere (to keep it weather-safe) then on to the switch, which will be installed where my now-unused fader switch is in my console. Don't quite know where I'll grab power to run the switch & relay yet, but something switched is the plan.

I hope to have this all done within the next week or so, as I have a track date at Summit Point on 6/21-22.

How's it coming???

Any updates on how the ASR defeat switch is coming/working for those who have tried? I still haven't figured out how to do it on a C36 yet, I've been busy playing with my "new" toy... a 1980 Ferrari 308 GTSi - nothing like the sound of a Ferrari at 7200 RPM!!! I logged on to alldata.com and paid the $20 bucks to get access to M-B C36 info, it has really good stuff, drawings, skematics, etc, this is where I'm trying to figure out the terminal assignments to defeat the ASR. I'll bet they have the same for the 500E , if some can do the same and find the descriptions of the three wires we're messin' about with it would help to explain the magic and myth behind ASR defeat and we can turn our tires into fine black powder!!!

PS - Newark has a whole pile of electronics stuff, as does Grainger, and several others - Good luck

I just spent 2 days at Watkins Glen in the right seat of one of those cars-sounded GREAT! If you don't put a Tubi exhaust on it, you're doing yourself a disservice since it makes about the sweetest sound imaginable...my vote for best sounding car in the paddock (worst-older Viper; most disappointing-Lambo Diablo SV, Racing version). Very very nice-handling car (this one was running Michelin Pilot Sport Cups), seemed very benign & controllable. Wish I could say how it felt to drive, but it was a student's car
