What was the fastest speed you ever gone in a car? and what car was it? Mine was around 168 MPH in a Ferrari F355(not mine). How about you guys?

170MPH/274KPH in a RUF Porsche 930 Turbo. When I was 21.

An indicated 165mph/265kph on my Suzuki XN85D Turbo...realistically I think it was about 150/241 'cuz I think the speedo was optimistic (still, fast on a bike). I was 23.

And 150/241 in my 500E :D :D ...so far, as I haven't had the opportunity to safely find the speed limiter on this thing...covering too much ground too quickly and at 150/241+ speeds ANY curve is fairly dramatic.

Guess I gotta road-trip to Nevada, or maybe that flat, salty place in Utah?!?

Perhaps with age comes a sense of mortality? I'm 36 now, and anything over 125mph/200kph seemss wicked fast to me.

"tach'd out" a 92 500E in top gear which (by the math) equates to 165mph. (speedo was pegged) Also, though not me, I know a 500E owner to did 150-155mph in a tunnel (yikes!).

How much is this going to cost me?

135 mph in a 500 E.

120 in a new CLK 430 (Richmond International Raceway)

145 mph in a '71 E-Type Jag V-12

145 in a '64 midnight blue Vette & about the same in a '64 GTO, 397 Chevy SS ... college days! We could go through a set of tires in 3,000 miles.

90 mph in our 300 D. Roger, I'm very impressed with your 87 in a 240 D!!

105 in our '85 2.3-16. The owners manual says it will do 143.

a very accurate 115 mph in my 1960 190 SL. The RCMP dashboard recoding device said 113.

100 mph in a 504 Peugeot.

59 mph in a 10 passenger Land Rover 110 Diesel (down hill).

makakio 07-13-2000 08:27 PM

Robby - did you just not have an opportunity to go faster in the 2.3-16?

Wow - you've made good time in some great cars! How terrifying were the GTO and Jag runs? Corvette?

Robby Ackerman 07-13-2000 11:25 PM

Makakio

Re the 2.3-16, the judge in this part of Virginia charges $50 for each 1 mph over 81. A friend of mine is facing a $2000 fine.

145 mph in the Vette was done at night, on a two-lane Carolina country road with tungston sealed beam headlights. Need I say more relative to the driving experience.

145 in the Jag, well we covered 60 miles in 25 minutes. Overtaking the few cars on the highway was like approaching a car on a two-lane road. Sometimes I'm amazed I made it past 30 years of age.

My brother was driving the jag one day when he engaged a vette in an impromptu race on a short street that led into the city landfill. The Vette has better brakes. My brother couldn't stop the jag and left the exhaust system and a few other parts behind in the landfill.

The Peugeot 504 was the best balanced car in that group of '60s and '70s autos. It cornered better than the jag and with its independent suspension and Michelin XAS tires was years ahead of many cars. I remember running flat out down this long hill on a Carolina county road in the 504. Got to the bottom and mid-way across this arched bridge the car went airborne and came down on the road in the middle of an intersection where this elderly lady in a Ford Galaxy was stopped at a stop sign. It touched down on the highway and kept on going without any fuss at all. For the past 20 years the car has been collecting dust in our barn. My kids do understand why I still hold onto it.

I ran the Beaujolais Run three times between 1988 and 1991 (basically a Cannonball Run across France by Brits with wine!)

In 1988 flat out in a UK spec.(225 hp) '75 450SL- 145 mph.

In 1990 150 mph in an '84 500SEC (240 hp).

In 1991 over 165 mph- in a 1987 560SEC (UK spec. 300hp, ran off the end of the speedo!

Each time was a great trip, drove from Beaujolais region to Calais (430 approx. miles) as quickly as possible!

My fastest was in my 500E - 140 - sweet smell afterward!

Scariest - now that I know better - in high school I took a '75 CJ5, dropped in a Chevy 350 shortblock, edelbrock torkers, holly 900, rancho suspension, Detroit lockers front and rear. Full road cage with racing harnesses. I got her up to 115 once  However, imagine front wheels engaged, in first, pop the clutch and power **** down to second! It was brutal off the line!

Gentlemen,

Sounds like we've all had some fun times here! To a note to this thread, the fastest I have ever been in a car was 152mph in my BMW 745i Turbo. I had my 6.9 up to 141mph (which was smooth as silk, BTW) and have been rocketed from 70mph to 140+mph in a friend's Audi 200 Turbo which was highly modified with a KKK turbo running 22Lbs of boost! Did anybody ever see that video tape on TV of some guy in Japan videotaping himself as he ran his Ferrari F355 to near 300 km on some expressway  That wasn't you was it HKOH :D Apparently he was arrested and fined after the video got in the wrong hands. I must say the car looked unbelievably steady at that speed. He was passing moving cars the same way we would pass parked cars on the side of a highway. Fastest I went was in a Volvo 850GLT (S70) 120mph on the French autobahn to England, had too many people in the car I guess ;) I intend to return on my own one day!

bdrought 07-22-2000 05:44 AM

Ive been a passenger in a 92 600SEL (first one in the UK!) as it bounced off the limiter at 155mph. My dad was driving at the time. Scary part was, it was on a gravel driveway (big ass manor house driveway)

Fastest I've driven is an indicated 148mph in my 300CE. Both on a British motorway, and on French autoroute (wow those are smooth!)

I have to say tho, my 300CE felt awefully light at that speed. Not fun. Images of the car fishtailing and sliding sidewards into the oncoming traffic, closing on them at near 250mph made me lose my nerve and slow down!!

Most scary was probably being catapulted to 130mph in my friends Subaru Impreza Turbo. 240bhp in a lightweight car. VERY quick.

The least scary is my 300D. The most annoying is my other car...I am sure I have gone past 100mph, but the stupid friggin speedo starts flashing at 85 and won't tell me squat  I suppose if a Trooper ever asks me how fast I was going, I honestly won't be able to say! :D

In the 500E between 145-150 on the way to Willow Springs on Highway 14.

On the track, at Daytona our 3.8 RSR was trimmed out to a bit over 170. Finished 13th overall in '98.

Our Tyrrell is geared for a bit over 185, which I saw on the back straight at Road Atlanta at practice at this year's Walter Mitty BOSS challenge. Broke a suspension piece on the curb coming out of the slow corner that leads onto the back straight (7?), so we didn't run in the race, though.

A bit over 140 on my Ducati 916.

A bit over 190 in Dick Trickle's backup Winston Cup car in a test in Charlotte a number of years back.

Top speeds are OK, but I guess getting around a track, for me, is a better measure of both the car and the driver. I guarantee that Lime Rock looks a LOT different in the 49's than it does at 59; Watkins Glen looks a Lot different at 1:52 than it does at 2:05 (and that's an Atlantic, not the big car), and Willow Springs--one of the highest average speed tracks in the States--looks a LOT different at 1:10 than it does at 1:35, thought the 1:35 still seems pretty quick.

Boy does this thread bring back the memories of my irresponsible teenage years! :D Those where the days when every car I drove, recieved its very own Top Speed run usually at night on a deserted road. Lets see;

84' Maxima - I think 125mhp
85' Maxima - 131mhp
72' Mustang w/351 Cleveland - Got it to 130-135mhp racing a Camero, boy that guy was LUCKY when he didn't kill himself. Tread came of the tire and wrapped around his axle at 120, amazingly it did not blow and roll the car!

88' Mustang - Highly modified for drag strip duty, with my Brother driving and my Dad in the front seat, 145mhp indicated, and a little more left in the motor.

92' Integra GSR - 133mhp, that was slightly down hill, that car was fun. P.S. Dont ever use the flushing solutions for oil changes, caused a crank knock immediately after doing this.

Haven't had the chance to run the C280 out of breath yet, these Washington troopers are very good at nabbing me for speeding, so I'll have to plan a run late at night out in the middle of nowhere.

Happy Motoring to All!

I do not know if the Speedo is not properly functioning on the car. But, on I-10 in Florida between Tallahassee and Jacksonville on my way home from school at about 2 in the morning. If I am under a half a tank of gas I can punch 100 on the Speedo and the car keeps kicking. I can not maintain this speed for long but I can maintain about 95-97 on the dash. I have a 1983 240D with a new engine I have put 14,000 on it. I have done between 125-130 in my dad’s 1989 300E on back roads in NC. I have almost posted similar times with my mom 1993 190E 2.6. But the best is in my sisters 1986 325 I clicked off about 135. Needless to say I was scared crapless when I hit some loose gravel. The only time I do this is when we first get a car and I take it on back road just to see what she can do. This March going to SC in my fathers 300E on 95 south I was passed by what I believe to be a newer model yellow Ferrari. I was doing 100 on cruise, I was passed like a blue hair driving a Caddy in the right lane. I did not bother to even try to attempt to catch it to see what it was The car passed me so fast all I saw was a yellow streak. The car was so low I never saw it until it got in front of me but I definitely heard that beautiful purrrrrrrrr.

08-18-2000 01:26 PM

Fastest sustained top speeds have been: 150+ mph (1994 LT-1 Camaro). Foot buried into the floorboard for about 10-15 minutes. When I had to slow down, speed did not drop much below 110-115 mph (curves, cresting hills etc) Total distance would be about 85 miles. Doesn't sound like a long time, but perception changes above about 120 mph.
135 (electronically limited) mph (1999 CLK). Same piece of road. Same amount of time (roughly)
Fastest speed (car) was about 300 km/h (about 187 mph) in a modified Acura NSX. That was a rush. The car was very solid at that pace, but distant objects appear awfully fast !

The roads were well known and in very good shape (we have some long straight divided hiways on the praries). Still a pretty dumb thing to be doing.... you never know when Bambi is going to jump out on the road, or Grandma appears out of nowhere. It really is best to leave the insane velocites to the racetrack, or if you are lucky the Autobahn. Even if you have top notch equipment, and are a skilled driver, you don't have much margin for error at 150 mph.
Just my 2c.

Q 08-25-2000 10:59 AM

135 in a 93 Nissan Maxima. The thing started to feel real light, so I eased off.

100 in a 78 Fiat Spider. She was doing all she could muster down hill. I thought I heard Scotty in the background yelling, "I'm givin' 'er all she's got Captn'. She's starting to break up." That thing was shaking like Catherine Hepburn.

Chris S. 09-03-2000 05:56 PM

Ok, I am only 21 so I don't have too much experience, but...
Age 16: Hit 95 in my first car, a 1975 300D, that was all she could do, but it was smooth acutally, the car is so heavy.
Age 18: Had an explorer and probably hit 100, the speedo stoped at 85
Age 20 to 21: Hit 125 in my '87 300E, I never seem to have the straight road to hit more than that in the hills of VA.
Also hit 130 in 1992 Porsche 968, and it had alot left which I will be exploring in the near future....

Robert W. Roe 09-03-2000 09:57 PM

I remember, back in the 1980's, somewhere in New Jersey, trying to keep up with a Ferrari 512BB in my '72 Oldsmobile Delta 88 455 V8. I got it up to perhaps 95 when it started shaking pretty scarily. I prudently backed off.

BZP 09-04-2000 12:52 PM

150 mph in an 89 Toyota Supra Turbo coming into Providence on Blizzaks. Blew out a rear tire and did a 720 ass into the jersey barriers. Pulled over changed the spare and drove home.
120 mph in 87 560SL, had to let off because the unbalanced tires felt like they were gonna shoot off the car.

ET 09-11-2000 12:44 PM

340+ km/h at Redrock speedway in a Nissan R390 GTR. The best lap time that I could achieve over the one hour session was 1:09:043. At speed, the sterring wheel vibrated like a jackhammer in my sweatdrenched hand as I gently depressed the throttle for more power. At Cornering, the car felt as though it was glued to the tarmac as I came out of the sweeping left and right corner. While the engine, sitting directly behind my left year, give out a deafening shriek... Boy, that car is a killer and its braking can onlt be described as breathtaking. Curtsy of Playstation. LoL.

Happy motoring,

I helped out a car rental firm in England once by helping them run in a BRAND new Ford Fiesta 1100cc with 15 miles on the clock. I think I had the valves bouncing for about an hour going up the M1 motorway one Sunday morning, 2 up with luggage, doing an indicated 105 MPH. Didn't half stink when we stopped for coffee at Newport Pagnall ! ;)

dacia 09-24-2000 01:51 AM

Fastest in my Renault Fuego was 195 km/h(120 mph), car felt like it was going to take off, that car is really light, scary moments at that speed, 200km/h (125mph) in my '86 300E, 210 km/h (130mph) in my friends '88 300E he was driving, and 115 km/h (70mph) in a friend's Trabant 601. For those of you, uninitiated with this wonderful piece of automotive technology from the former East-Germany: all body panels made of plastic (will never rust), gastank under the hood sits directly on top of engine hence no fuelpump, four speed standard transmission, shifter on dashboard, aircooled two-cylinder two-stroke 600cc engine front mounted, front wheel drive. Sits four small adults, heating is provided by the engine cooling fan. 6 volt battery and electrical system. On the other hand hardly anything to go wrong with it and very easy to repair. Tonns of them are still in use in the former East-Block countries. 0 to 60 km/h you ask?, let's just say that Maurice Green was faster the other day in Sydney, Australia. :)

I made 147 mph in my slk 230 kompressor, no the computer didn't shut me down like it is supposed to. By the way that is redline in fifth gear on the manual tranny. On my way back down to normal speed I was at about a buck flat when I passed the cop going the other way, he never bothered to turn around.

I also hit 167 mph in my buddy's 1999 Camaro z28.

And I passenegered a ride in my friends 97 highly modified LT-1 Camaro to 170 mph

also hit 123mph in my mother's intrigue

BlokDok 09-28-2000 08:23 PM

robby A, was that a lap speed at richmond of 120mph in a clk 430?? i will try to get to use the oval and road course at the speedway in LV, specifically to challenge my partner who has an M5. i, hopefully, will be armed with a CLK 55. i am probably a better driver and i think the 55 will edge out the M5. we will see. i have been thinking about how hard i can push it on the oval. believe me, if i can get the car there, i will not be braking deep in the turns. i should be able to cruise around there around 130 or so. what do you think? if you dont know (you probably do), the track is a trioval, 1.5mi, with 12 degrees in the turns. if you have never been there, it is an awesome facility...

abalto 09-30-2000 10:06 PM

145mph in my 1998 C43 AMG (really did not take that long to get there at all!) and car was absolutely rock solid, and 150mph on 1992 Kawasaki ZX-7...

LarryBible 10-02-2000 08:25 AM

I have Rogers 240D speed beat. I've been almost 100 MPH in my '84 Euro 240D. It was when it was young and strong.

I have been a touch past 150 MPH in my Vette.

But, the most fun to me is sustained high speed on the Autobahn. I was in a Ford Mondeo and an Audi A4 in Germany a few weeks ago. Running a sustained 207Kph in the A4, and 220 Kph in the Mondeo when you finally find a section with no traffic is a real kick. I think this is more of a kick than a short blast at 150 MPH. The sensations are incredible. It is amazing how soon you get accustomed to 100MPH being your slowed down cruise speed. It is also amazing how the sensation of speed is not linear. The difference in sensation is significant when going from 100MPH to 120 MPH, but going from 120MPH to 130MPH is amazing.

Fun thread,

in my Starion, with bikes on the roof 120, there was plenty power left, but I was worried about the roof rack leaving me.

and when I get my new 6 speed TDI, I'll let you know!

BlokDok - 120 mph was our top speed in the CLK 430 not the average lap. The Richmond International Raceway is a very short D shaped 3/4 mile oval. Yesterday my friend Jim Villers did some hot laps at RIR in the new CLK 55! I can't wait to talk with him!Your speed is going to depend on your tires. We were riding on street tires.

robby A, was that a lap speed at richmond of 120mph in a clk 430?? i will try to get to use the oval and road course at the speedway in LV, specifically to challenge my partner who has an M5. i, hopefully, will be armed with a CLK 55. i am probably a better driver and i think the 55 will edge out the M5. we will see. i have been thinking about how hard i can push it on the oval. believe me, if i can get the car there, i will not be braking deep in the turns. i should be able to cruise around there around 130 or so. what do you think? if you dont know (you probably do), the track is a trioval, 1.5mi, with 12 degrees in the turns. if you have never been there, it is an awesome facility...

Well this is an old topic but I must put in my 2 cents. The saddest and most dissapointing top speed I have experienced was in my first car. My first car was an 86 Mercury Cougar with a 3.8 Liter V6 with an engine problem and 3 speed auto tranny. I read in the manual that it would not tell me how fast I was going over 85 because I had one of those digital speedos. To my depressing surprise my dad was with me and told me to floor it and the piece of junk stopped at 83 mph with a roar like it had a pratt and whitney turbo fan jet engine or something.
My 89 190 2.6 however has seen 120 briefly a while back but I slowed down very quickly because back then I had a shake problem which turned out to be bad skiny tires that were out of round and then later needed some tie rods. I hear it should do 128 though. I guess they put 140 on the speedo to help sell more of them or so you could show your friends rather than actually go that fast but hey 128 is light speed compared to 83! My dad's 87 mazda B2200 pickup truck 2.2 liter with 5 speed could do like 90 or 95! HOW SAD!He did tell me about memories of his old morris minor that shook like crazy goin 60 :)

160+ in my S4 (at the time I was running chipped at 320hp).

If anyone in the Seattle area is looking for a good top speed run, head out to north bend and between milepost 26 and 30 is a 3 mile long downhill 4 lane staight!!!!

In My Wife's 1986 300E with 143,000 miles. I hit 137MPH with 4 people in the car. No photo though.

Haven't tried the 1992 400E. After the Suspension and Wheel change I'll try a 150MPH run.

Seattle S4,

Are you doing this regularly? I'm a cop magnet (I've no idea why), so the opportunity to test the top end on the C280 has not come up.

Whats your secret? Are there no "hiding places" or is this a truely deserted area?

Kyle 11-30-2000 06:36 PM

I think I hit my top speed of 8mph here in the bay area. Still haven’t found good truly deserted areas around here either.

When I wasn't in the traffic ridden bay area, here's a few top speeds I came across:

Hit 100mph in my parents '95 Suburban, that was fun, but learned that it has a gas shut off at 100mph exactly...

Hit 115 in my old Audi GT Coupe... that was a fun car. Happened to pass a CHP going the other way, but was lucky enough to notice, and ditch him before he could catch up.... phew. Also hit 115 in my '80 VW Rabbit L, stuck a 16V Golf GTI engine and converted it to a manual tranny with some sticky tires and that thing flew (for a Rabbit).

Still waiting for the opportunity to reach 145 in my 400e... I think it will be a while before I can do that :-(
