Using Torque plates for honing

Hey guys,
I was wondering if a torque plate was needed to simulate head bolt block distortion when honing the M111 block?...or if using torque plates were a standard proceedure on any mercedes engines from new or being reconditioned?

As its an extra cost im not keen on doing it unless its nessasary too.

Well i have never seen any used on the 100s of rebuilds i have seen, my own w123 M110 was over bored some 18 years back without the use of a plate and it lived 18 yrs.

I say it wont hurt if u go thru with making the plate, but am sure you can make do without. After all a freind of mine just over bored his mitsubishi engine from 2.0 to 2.3 without a plate and the car is making a healthy 500+ hp.

If you were only honing the block, I would not havre thought a torque plate would be necessary. If your were boring the block and it was for a high horsepower application, then you might consider it.

When an engine is bored & then honed to final size, it is a good idea to have a torque plate bolted to the block.

If you are using a "glaze" breaker to rough-up the cylinder walls, that plate is not needed.

Ahh ok thanks guys,we have bored the block upto the oversized 91.4 pistons already without the torque plate ,this time around its just a deglaze,hopfully distortion is not an issue as its a new block if we have to re-bore.
