Jacobs Ignition Kits - Whos Got One?

I read of an ignition booster system on a thread here so went looking and found a few reviews (mainly on 4 wheel drive sites) which gave the Jacobs kit a thumbs up. The prices seem good and installation easy enough.

So question is has anyone tried installing one in a Merc and esp a 102 engine?

Had a jacobs omni on my 500SEC euro a few years back. Made the engine run very smooth. You could turn the idle down to a few hundred rpm in park and it would run smooth. One problem, it made the spark too hot. I had major problems after a few weeks, the car would start up fine and within 1-2 minutes it would drop the rpms to about 300 and the car sounded like a Geo Metro with a straight pipe! It would run like that for 30 seconds or so and then die. Went back to factory ignition and returned the jacobs kit for full refund.

Thanks for the feedback, I noticed that they strongly reccomend the plug gap be changed to a certain width regardless of application.

I could never get over the price of those Jacobs. Years ago I bought a Crane HI-6 with a PS-92 coil for my Chevota. Very powerful spark, you can run any size gap you want. It has a built in adjustable rev limiter too. It fires multiple times at idle and lower rpms to light a poor air/fuel mix. But with fuel injection and a modern ignition I’m not sure how much there is to gain.

I had an Omni magnum in my 190E 2.3 8 valve back when thats what the car was. I don't know if that Omni magnum added any power, but my engine ran so much smoother. I could mainly notice the difference above 4000 RPMs. It was the difference between night and day. I played around with the plug gap and had some good results with a larger plug gap.

Hey Chevota!

What is a Chevota?

Chevota 07-13-2004 04:44 PM

It's a super high tech state of the art custom designed and hand built super truck. Aka the truck I built from old used parts. CHEVy engine, ToyOTA Body.
Also referred to by those who consider it an abomination; a "Toyolet"

Any pics on the web? It sounds interesting. My neighbor used to have an older toy pickup with a 388ci stroked small block chevy set up for 4 wheelin.
