Can't get top boot up...560sl

Sorry, I posted similar in the tech forum but forgot there is an Sl forum.

When I popped the handle to open the flip up to release the convertible top only one side came loose. Any ideas short of prying it loose how to get the other side to realese. Or is there a way to get at it to open it up without taking the whole car apart?

Thanks.

Go inside the car and slightly open the boot top lid. Raise it just enough to get your hand in there and reach the release catch. Push it to the left (as you are looking at it from inside) and it should release the top. Once you do get it open, adjust the catch as required.

Just to verify: The soft top is down, the hardtop is off, but the lid releases on one side only. Correct?

Haven't had this one happen--anyone with any ideas?

Got it off, thanks.

Tugged a little, pushed-pulled a little, swore a little, drank a lot, gave up, came back, repeated, it finally came loose. I lubed it up good. Tightened the pull up a few turns, now it works every time.

Musta been the beer.

This happens to mine as well. I pull handle and one side releases. I then go to the other side and pull lightly on the "boot cap". While pulling I reach over and pull the handle again. It always pops open.

Wink

Thus demonstrating that both parts and owners work better when appropriately lubricated...

What is this handle called? I need a new one for my car and am not sure what the name of it is? Also let me guess the replacement cost 250.00?

It's called a folding top crank. The part# is 107 750 00 42 and the pad that attaches to it is 107 750 00 66. A new one will cost you a bit above $20. If you need the pad also, you might have to get that from a dealer, maybe $15. I ordered one last year from a dealer and he said it only comes in black. The EPC indicates that it's color coded to the interior.

I just experienced this problem. The root cause was probably 18 years of lack of adjustment on the cabling and a complete lack of lubrication throughout, which is my fault - I thought I got everything. Regasketing and refinishing the boot lid didn't help either. A long Sears screwdriver through the front slot on the drivers side and the coathanger through the trunk trick, mentioned in the shop manual, for the passenger side released it. Unfortunately, the lock part of my crank (the part behind the actual crank) broke - the two tangs that mate with the inside the well winch part broke.

Does anyone know if this part comes WITH the crank when you buy a new one? I haven't seen it listed anywhere.
