My '76 107 is Number 1

I agree. My '76 gets looks wherever I go. People feel compelled to approach me EVERY time I drive it. Today I actually took the old owner to lunch after having owned his car for 6 months and fixed a hundred little things that made a big difference.

Like usual, someone was staring at it when we pulled in, and minutes later there were 4 people checking it out that just wanted to tell me how much they liked it.

RZ Rob
BTW, I always drive it with the top down - I think people get a vicarious thrill.

Just to represent the 380SL owners out there, I would like to add our car to the above mentioned list. Were there 280SLs (R107s) sold in the U.S. ? Eventually I would like to get a set of the second generation of the "bundt cake rims", like the ones that were put on starting in 1986.

I don't mean to burst your bubble but the slc model of these cars is waaaay sexer than the sl. The best thing about the slc is tha you can buy at least 2 and usually 3 of them for what you pay for an sl. No rag tops to rot and break down, no one cutting into your car through the top, lower insurance rate, safer in an accident, can carry 4 persons (I didn't say adults), and you don't have a convertable so you don't feel compeled to drive with the top down and get beaten to death by the wind and rain. Besides the side profile of an slc is sooo much cleaner and eye appealing than that of an sl.

Greatest 107!

Yes our American 107 saved war revenged Europe and gave MB a market to get started again. The cute " Euro nub bumpers " are really a turn off to most! When I look at the only toy model of the 380SL available in the market place and see the " nub bumpers " I think what a shame, these little cars look like Miatia's. Euro headlights may or may not be cool but the Park Bench Bumpers are the Big Dog!

I know quite a few of you out there like the cheap skimpy euro bumpers.

but i have to tell you honestly i think the car looks naked without the big one, I guess because I grew up seeing the bigger richer one on the 107.

the biggest problem us Americans have, is that we have soo much more money then the rest of the world and we always are used to having the best.

damn I wish I could be cheaper in my old age... but I just cant do it.

Maybe you need some thicker skin? I just read the post from start to finish and I see no bashing at all. Just a lot of opinion which you asked for right in the first sentence. Bashing would be "you don't have a clue, these cars look and drive like a truck compared to a nice Jag"

Pili380

Is that a cut to the 380 or a cut to the Miata?

Would you care what they say? Jump on the Hayabusa and blow anything off the road. That bike is insane!

It definitely wasn't a cut on the SL, Steve. I don't think there's any comparison. The Miata's my daily driver, though. Much better gas mileage, and I don't worry about the idiots in the employee parking area quite as much. The Busa? Yeah, it's crazy fast, but not a very good winter machine .
