Click, bump, boomp.....when I close my door???
All of a sudden my driver's side door makes a series of three irritating sounds when I close it. It appears that the notched piece that keeps the door open in the two preset positions and whatever it intefaces with are the culprits. When I take the door panel off what should I expect to see in there? What does the notched "door positoner" come in contact with?
I'd like to know how to prepare for the project. Thanks. |
Have you tried a Porsche site ?

Hmmm, What happened to my siganture line? Should say '85 380SL.....?
Anyway that's the car I'm asking for. |
Rick, Just get a new door check from the dealer or Fast Lane if they have them, they should not be much money. I think 3 bolts hold them in place,,,, not a real big deal.

Before buying new, replacing and re=hanging the door, have you tried lubricating? These hinges like all vehicle hinges get dry. Spray some WD40, or similar proprietory machine oil at the hinge pins and use a little dry lube, grease will do in a pinch, across the face of the two position stop of the hinge assembly. Open and close the door a few times and the noise should be gooone! Hinges generally only need replacing when they wear to the point the door actaully sags and won't close without lifting it slightly. If you take hold of your open door at the bottom end (nearest the door handle), at the first open stop, try lifting it up and down. If it's worn that it needs replacing, you will hear and feel an audible clunk in the hinge area, normally the bottom one goes first! Lubricate first before entering a job that may not need to be done. My 2 cents.

I am having the same problem with my 380. It is the door check, I can see the roller on the door check is seriously worn. I had previously lubed it with silicone and that took card of it for a while, but the noise is back.
Now, as far as it "not being much money". Fastlane wants $115 for ONE!. Now, I would sort of understand if the door check is actually holding the door up, but the hindges do that. The door check just provides stopping points for the door. I haven't checked Performance PArts yet, but I am not holding my breath for a price break. I'lll have buy one because mine is worn out, but $115? |
I'm definetly NOT buying a door. I'll open and verify that the roller or other parts are either worn or intact. The noise is almost like a taught, heavy spring being pulled and let go.
I'll keep all apprised of my progress. |
My 96 129 is doing the same thing, loud cracking noises, it is the door check. I don't know how much for a 107, but for my 129 it is $36 bucks. MBCA discount included. Call the dealer and check their price too. Good luck!

I just looked up a R129 door check at Fastlane and it's listed for $26. The 107s have a completely different design with 2 large springs.
