560SL Driveline Noises

Last week, my 560SL developed a "click" that soon became a "clack" on acceleration. Then a "thump" on deceleration. The noises are definitely tied to wheel speed. No noise at constant speed. Both sound like they are coming from the rear, but hard to tell.

One minute the car was normal, the next it was making the noises.

I have not put the car up for a look yet, but the rear flex disk seems solid, and all the rear suspension parts are in their right places. Normally I would suspect the center driveshaft bearing, but in my experience, these thump on acceleration.

TIA for any ideas.
