Engine s/n location 79 SLC 500

A friend is trying to identify which version of engine he has in a Euro 79 SLC which is badged as 500 SLC. It sounds like this is a particularly difficult model to correctly identify.
Can someone confirm exactly where to look on the engine to find the id numbers ? Are there any other tell tale details to assist in proper identification of this particular engine as aluminum or cast iron?
