Clunking Noises
Anyone have any ideas on why my 98 SL 500 makes so many clunking sounds? They come from the front end, back end and sometimes seems like right under the seats. I've had it looked at by one dealer and 2 independent garages. Everyone says it is a very clunky car but they can not find anything causing the noise. Any ideas? Thanks.

Mines not 'clunky' or noisy in any way apart from a little squeak from what sounds like the exhaust and I can only hear it in the summer!?

Generally, mine isn't clunky either.
However, I once had a knocking, clunky noise coming from the front suspension which could be felt in the wheel when cornering over rough roads. I changed the ant-roll bar (sway bar) bushes. Cost about GBP10. Cured the problem. What's your mileage? It may be that some of the rubber is starting to go.

No clunking noises here other... And I have the heavy V12.
Mine does creak when going over bumps unevenly. That is normal though, just flex in the frame, as there is no roof.

My 92 500 SL clunked on occasion. It was coming from the rear. It turned out to be rear control arm bushings. All is quiet now.

clunking
Thanks guys for the input. My SL has just under 69000 miles on it. Will have the shop focus on those areas. I had my wife drive it slowly down the street while I cruised beside her. Every little bump in the road made it sound like the car was going to lose something in the road. It is getting worse. Will let you know if your suggestions work. Thanks again.
