My Tonneau lid won't lock on my 380sl

The tonneau lid (also known as the storage compartment lid for the convertible top) on my 380SL won't lock on the drivers side when I close it. I suspect the solution is I have to move the catch over slightly. Does anybody know of any tricks to performing this task other than hit and miss?
