Great debate guys! I am still recovering from it now...yawn. I am, however, disappointed that nobody really got mad or hurled abuse. I love those.
I would also like to add my comments to your most intelligent discourse, if I may.
See Spot. See Spot run. See Jane. See Jane chase Spot...........See Dick. See Dick fill up with Sunoco Gold unleaded fuel with a 94 octane rating. See Dick talking with his bank manager about borrowing money for his next fill up.............

Tongue and Cheek ......:)

hello fellows,

Back to the original question, I had this question some time ago and I asked directly the mercedes classic centre in germany about it. I got the following answer:

Dear Sir,

Your question about the use of unleaded fuel is easy to answer:
All Mercedes-Benz cars (pre-war and post-war) have absolutely no problems
with unleaded fuel.

We recommend to use fuel with an octane rating of 98 (ROZ) for every type
and also a regular
control of the valve clearance, twice as much as specified by the factory.
In our experience no additional lead substitute additive is necessary.

A normal use of the car is required, of course.

We hope this will help , please feel free to ask if you have further
questions.

The upshot seems to be that even though Leaded Gas is not good for you, the unleaded alternative is a net loss from a pollition / health hazard standpoint. I am glad to have had this education. It makes total sense too. I know that the MTBE required in Chicago is carcenogenic but they don't eliminate it because of political banter in the EPA and DOT which practice pseudo-science in their persuit of power or funding or whatever it is that they seek.

I generally take pride in my spell check and editing trying to promote better wordssmith (is that a word?) At this point, I would humbly ask for forgiveness for screwing up "tongue IN cheek" ( as opposed to tongue AND cheek). I blaim this oversight on my rush to be an a**hole. Please accept my opologies.

Hee..Hee..Hee...

Hey Tom..You are kidding right?

MTBE is a chemical additive to gasoline.
DOT is Department of Transportation.
EPA is Enviornmental Protection Agency.
