any tricks for removing accum. dirt around 560SL emblem?

I recently purchased a 1986 560SL. The car is in excellent shape but after 20 years of life, there is alot of accumulated dirt around the 560SL emblem. I have tried Qtips/windex, etc. but I have not been successful. Any ideas on a product to use as well as a device to clean this area? Thanks.

You could try a dremel with a light brush or pointed buffing fitting. You could also remove the emblem from inside the trunk lid.

Toothbrush and some 409 like spray

Just carefully remove the push nuts on the back side of the emblem. Comes right off real easy and then you can polish your little heart out. Use a pair of needle nose pliers and pull them straight off.

The push nuts on mine did not come off this way. On my car the push nut was installed from the top into the hood and the emblem is pressed into it. It is a real pain in the A. but I had to push the whole emblem and nut out from under the hood, while gentely pulling from the top.

I think the 560SL (only?) embelem is vacuum plated plastic, and is held on with double-sided tape. With GREAT care, it can be removed intact - I've done it. I bought a used embelem with no tape and successfully renewed it with double-sided trim tape made for this purpose, trimmed with a razor blade.
