450slc Jacking Points?

Hi All,

I've got a newbie question. I have a 1980 450slc and just bought some pristine alloy wheels to replace the dust damaged front alloys.

It did not come with the original jack. I need to use my floor jack to change the wheels. The maintenance manual instructs me to buy a special insert to go into the original jack's lifting points. This seems like it should be unneccessary.

So, to finally come to my question, would someone instruct me where to lift using a generic floor jack? As long as we're at it, would you instruct me on both the front and the rear?

Typically, I put the floor jack under the lower control arms. I think you can also put it where the cross-member attaches on either side, but I might be confusing my models here.

why not do as on 202, there are jackpoints just under the holes for the merc jack... so i always jack it up there, also says so in "haynes" DIY manual

The jacking point under the existing jack holes it a bit of a gamble, it still is the outer sill of the vehicle and is not designed as a literal jacking point. however used. Mercs also tend to rust in the area of the jacking points in the sills. Great to start jacking and hear what you believe is suspension extention noises however then find the noise is actually a collapsing sill as the jack plate starts making a new home for itself in your sill , pushing up the sill before lifting the vehicle!

I have never had any grief jacking off the underside of the front wishbones or the rears, directly under the lower shock absorber mounts. It's safe, stable and solid, just means getting on your hands and knees to line up the jack point. Go with the other post, no offence intended.

Help. I want to jack up both rear tires. Using a floor jack and/or the factory jack, where do I jack up the car AND where do I put the jack stands?

Place jack under centre of rear differential, place jackstands inboard of rear side jacking points (Under vehicle at point where lower control arms pivots- where suspension bolts to underside of body). Lower jack slowly till weight of vehicle is taken on jack stands, Leave jack in place for added safety. Loosen wheel nuts first before jacking unless using air rachet!
