560sl center vents new question

On my 88 560sl, vents and all were working fine. Gradually the center vents needed a lower and lower temperature setting to open for air flow on the "economy seting" until they do not open at all on that setting. When I use air conditioning however, they will open. Is it a temperature sensor issue as obviously the units work? And if so, how do I reach it? Thanks if you can help.

If your problem is the temperature sensor, and it very well could be, it is located at the top center of the dash. There is a small, square plastic louver. Do not try to remove from the top!

To get to the sensor you will need to remove the glove compartment box. Do not remove the compartment door, but remove the four plastic fasteners. They have a center post that prys up, and allows the fastener to come out. Save them. The glove compartment light will need to be pryed down and remove the wires. The box can then be worked out.

The sensor is a small "thermistor" device with an electrical connector hooked to it. It will be over to the left and up. There is also a tube that brings air across it. The big problem is the tube which is made from foam, and dry rots and disintegrates. If the sensor wire is still connected and the sensor has not fallen down, and the tube looks bad, you can replace the tube with clear plastic tubing from Home Depot or Lowes. The tube draws air from the climate control and across the sensor. My sensor was broken off of the louver and had fallen down, and the tube was rotten. if the sensor is down, you will need to take the plastc louver out. There is an inside part that slides off (some click-teeth), and allows the upper part to be removed. The sensor is originally glued into the louver. If it is intact, and you need to remove it, you will need to remove the wires and connector from it first. I purchased a new assembly from Phil. Was in mid$30, and rehooked the connector and put in new tube.

Thanks, looks like I'll be digging in back there this weekend. Joe
