a quick question!

i have just bought an SL55 AMG and have been away to several business meetings over the country in it. i love it but the only thing i have found is that there isnt too much storage space in the boot for my clothes, laptop etc. has anybody else had the same problem? i know its not meant to be a practical car in storage aspects but still. any feedback much appreciated.

Unless you are (1) a girl or (2) going away for a very long time, I should imagine the storage space in the boot to be more than adequate. Perhaps your laptop is a very old and big model.

Anyway, if short, you always have available the area behind the seats, which is outfitted with straps to secure your luggage; you can even purchase (at eye-watering expense) a specially fitted suitcase to fit in that area (it is also of somewhat dubious appearance, but then taste is a matter of taste).

Nice car, though.

Go for the custom luggage. It ain't all that bad looking, and comparied to the cost of an SL55, it's practically a bargain!

Luggage For The New Mercedes SL-Class
Posted on February 14, 2006 at 3:40 PM CST

After the onslaught of Mercedes SL-Class articles today, I'm sure most of you are already on your way to the local MB dealership to lay down a sizeable down payment on the freshly updated roadster.

But once you return home, waiting impatiently for your new baby to arrive, you're probably going to be thinking to yourself: "What would be the perfect accessory to compliment my SL's new cognac brown nappa leather?"

How about the new rear shelf bag, custom ordered to match your interior?

That's right ladies in gentlemen, in addition to updating the SL, everybody favorite MB accessory has been updated as well. The new rear shelf bag can now be custom ordered to match any interior color choices, and to ensure a proper color match, the upgraded bag is even constructed out of the very same leather that graces the rest of your beloved SL. Of course, if the idea of matching doesn't appeal to you, you can still opt for the more traditional black as well.

In addition to the nappa leather, the new rear shelf bag is constructed out of black ballistic nylon, ensuring a durable yet stylish storage solution, and optional luggage straps will help keep any valuables from becoming airborne during your travels.

Pricing for the bags range from $400 - $1,000, with the new custom colors being released later this year.

OFFICIAL PRESS RELEASE

Rear shelf bag for the new-generation Mercedes-Benz SL-Class: Ideal transport solution for the SL

Stuttgart, Feb 14, 2006

Mercedes-Benz Accessories GmbH offers a rear shelf bag that has been specifically developed and designed for the new Mercedes Benz SL Class. An ideal solution for longer trips, this stylish, extremely versatile luggage holder is suitable for transporting all manner of items. What really sets the bag apart, however, is the fact that it is custom-made to maximise utilisation of the rear shelf space inside the new SL-Class. The meticulously selected materials – smooth nappa calf leather and textured ballistic nylon – are a blend of sophisticated aesthetics and outstanding durability. Customers can also order a special-edition rear shelf bag in the Roadster's original seat colour, made from the same hard-wearing yet supple leather as the seat upholstery.

The latest version of this fully-customised transport solution – traditionally one of the most popular accessories for the open-top two-seater – has been modified and enhanced to meet the needs of increasingly discerning customers. SL drivers now have even more choice and can specify a rear shelf bag that fully mirrors their own personal taste: as well as being available in the standard black/black design, the bag can be ordered in the three most popular original seat leather colours for the SL-Class, combined with black ballistic nylon in each case. Customers can also specially request any other original seat leather colour to ensure a perfect match with the existing interior. Each two-tone version of the elegant rear shelf bag is produced using the original seat leather.

Thanks to the integral loops made from durable nappa calf leather, the rear shelf bag can be fastened extremely securely using the optional luggage straps. In addition, the base of the high-quality bag is raised slightly in the centre – a neat design solution that ensures a perfect, snug fit across the Roadster's centre tunnel. Furthermore, the bag's intelligent interior partitioning allows packing in a number of different ways in order to protect valuable items.

The rear shelf bag is made by a renowned German brand-name producer that has enjoyed a successful partnership with Mercedes-Benz Accessories GmbH for many years now. So customers can always be sure that the product will meet Mercedes-Benz' exacting standards of quality and workmanship.

The all-black version of the rear shelf bag for the new SL-Class is available now from all authorised Mercedes-Benz dealerships, with prices starting from € 400. The two-tone bags will be launched in the second quarter of 2006.

Prices for Germany incl. VAT*:

SL rear shelf bag in black:
€ 400

SL rear shelf bag in one of three colour combinations - black/pebble beige, black/alpaca grey, black/cognac brown:
€ 550

SL special-edition rear shelf bag:
€ 950

I was just thinking about the same thing.

MB should release a similar version for the R129. Heck, there are enough R129 out there and I think plenty of R129 owners would love to have one. I know I would.

There must have been fitted luggage available for the 129 from Mercedes: I remember you could get it for the 170 SLK when that came out and you can now have it for your 230 or 171... but I have never been able to find any reference to it anywhere, not even in the contemporary sales brochures.
