Light out in Transmission Selector 500 SL

500 SL Community:

Per a previous post the bulb is out in the Transmission Selector on my 1995 500 SL.

Despite responses saying removal of center console is easy, I have not been able to find a way. Also contrary to posts, there are no descriptions in the forum detailing how to do it, other than saying it is easy and telling me what kind of bulb to use.

Can someone please post a step by step, or attach a PDF from the manual on how to do this?

Thanks
W

I have placed a console removal video at the following link. Download it.

Thanks much - beats prying the wood console off with a flat head screw-driver. I guess the next step is to get a pair of those radio removal tools.

Those special tools shown in the video aren't absolutely necessary. They are nice, but if you are careful and patient, you can use a couple of small plastic shimes ( like credit cards ) to release the little tabs under the radio. That assumes you have the original Becker radio. After market radios have the dual DIN release holes on the sides. You can get a DIN tool at most any auto radio repair shop.

Believe it or not, the 1995 has an Alpine radio as OEM - looks identical to the Becker.

But takes the same tool as the Becker. Found it on e-Bay for $1.00 and $4.00 shipping.

I know because I had the LCD display replaced a couple of weeks ago. $150 at La Jolla Radio. One of the few places in the country that will do it and not recommend scrapping the entire radio.
