EBC Ceramic Brake Pads for the 560SL
I finally found a supplier who makes Ceramic break pads for the 560SL. They are called EBC and they make both front and rear pads. The EBC Red is the one, does anyone have any experiance with these pads.

John, will you be replacing your front rotors as well? If so, what brand rotor are you going with? I see that ATE, Balo and Brembo are popular.
How about fron wheel bearings and seals? At what mileage should the bearings/races/seals be replaced? thanks. |

Do you have to install special rotors when you use ceramic brake pads?

You should install tougher rotors. The ceramic pads are very tough, and although the ceramics will last for a long time, the rotors will be chewed faster than if you used a metallic pad.

Then get expensive rotors - the cheapies will die faster under ceramics.

EBC reds
I put a set on front and rear about a month ago on my 91 500SL.
I really am happy with them. Better stopping power and although the throw out a ton of dust during the 500-1000 break in period, after that they are almost dustless.. Matt

I wanted the Ceramics especially for the dust. This was the first time I saw a ceramic pad available for the front breakes of 560SL. They are actually not even listed in the 2007 catalog so they must have just come out with it. I purchased the EBC Red. There doesent seam to be an EBC Yellow available yet. I'm hoping the yellows come out soon as I could use them for my V12 560SL.
As far as better rotors. My feeling is Balo is the best of the replacement rotors available. I can get them for about $100.00 a set. Arround here it cost about $40.00 per set to have them resurfaced and usually if they are worn at all they will be too thin. The only way to know in most cases is to just try it and hope you are lucky. The only alternatives I've seen to the Balos are the ATE rotors with the slots machined into them. I belive these are the same as the stock ATE with a star shaped slot cut arround them for about $10.00 more. I dont see these lasting any longer. They also look like a dust factory so I havent tried them. Then I have seen about one or two slotted and cross drilled rotors at about twice the price. Maybe these are made of better steel but I do belive slots and drill holes will create more dust and at twice the price will I be able to cut them 3 times to save an money. John Roncallo |

It looks like EBC is letting me down. from two different places I ordered the pads and both places ended up refunding me. The last place said the pads were obsolete. So now I'm trying a third vender at about $20.00.
I do hope I can get Ceramic Brakes for my car. John Roncallo |

I bought the ceramics from tire rack. I have had good luck with them except mine did not have the holes for the wear sensors.
