I had my '75 in for the repair a couple of years ago. It is covered and they'll use the VIN to confirm whether or not it has already been done under warranty. Mine did not show any evidence of cracking, so they just welded the reinforcement. Unfortunately, they only did one side. The other side was slightly bent and they would not weld it (said I or someone must have hit something hard enough to bend the subframe). Still driving that way. May fix it someday, but I occasionally put it up and look for any obvious signs of fatigue, hoping I'll catch it before a catastophic break.

I live in the Chicago area and went to 3 different repair shops, 2 dealerships and 1 major mercedes shop and all of them had no knowledge of this being a major problem. The dealerships couldn't even find the repair kit for the reinforcement. Both stated they could find some minor recall years ago, but no information on it. I'm not trying to say it's not a problem, but it makes me wonder how serious of one. I was going to look into having it reinforced, but at least in this general area, no ones done this repair before. So I guess I'll just keep watching it.

I have an '81 SLC and I want to emphasize to all with an 80+ model. REINFORCE THE SUBFRAME!!!!. Mine just failed doing 60MPH and it was dicy getting stopped. I'll post up on its replacement as I am doing it myself

Mercedes gets a big fail on the subframe problem. They only covered US model 450SL/SLC and the '72 US 350SL 4.5. I know this is an old thread but never hurts to repeat the warning.

If you can find a good used 560SL subframe use it. It is updated and reinforced.

anyone have a part number for this reinforcement kit? my 84 500 sl is cracked in the same area...i have a 380sl subframe that is good that i can reinforce id like to take care of this issue asap
