450SL - Moving to new climate, which tires should I use?
Later this summer, my 1980 450SL, my fiance, and I are moving from Texas to Illinois. The tires on my car are bad right now, so I need to replace them, but since I am going to be moving to a new climate that I know nothing about (born and raised in Texas), I'm not sure what I should do about tires.
What brands/types/sizes tires do you all recommend for the type of climate up there - particularly the winter? I just want to make sure I get the right ones on there. Thanks! |
The type of tires that are needed depends on what part of the state your moving to. Northern areas you might want some type of snow tires for the winter and a set of good radials for the summer months. Southern areas of Ill., you could probably get by with good radials or all-season tires. To play it safe, I'd get a good brand of all-season radials and hope that the snow is not heavy next winter. As mentioned earlier, I have two sets of tires on rims, Snows for winter and Dunlap radials for the summer.

Awesome, thanks for the info! I'm going to be in Naperville, so I guess that's more of the northern climate?

Don't even think about driving your car on the roads up here between November and March. They lay down so much salt, liquid calcium chloride, and gravel that your nice car will turn into a rust bucket before your eyes in 2 or 3 winters. That's why they call this part of the country the rust belt. Those of us who want to keep are cars in good condition store them over the winter and buy a "road rat" for a daily winter driver.

Agreed - don't drive a 107 in the rust belt in the winter unless you have no choice.

Live here in Dallas,Texas. I have the Michelin Hydroedge. Hot summers and cool winters. we can go a month without rain and then when it does, the road surface is covered in oil so the road is very slippery as the water causes the oil to bead up. During the winter we don't regularly get snow so for the few times we do, or when we get our usual ice storm, just don't drive. I don't. Texans with luxury cars and trucks think they can drive in ice. So for the few days that the ice is on the roads, we just stay home.
