'96 SL320 cold shifting
I have had my SL now for only 2 months and it drives beautifully but has a quirk that bothers me. When cold, it seems to almost refuse to shift from 3rd to 4th. This condition lasts less than 5 minutes on average until the temp gauge gets to the normal 80c mark and then everything is fine. None of the shift points are rough even when cold and transmission fluid level is right on the mark. Once the car gets to normal operating temp it shifts flawlessly. Has anyone else experienced this? My concern is that in cold weather this period where it won't shift may be much longer...any ideas?

02 sensor in the exhaust. It's working the way it's supposed to. 5 minutes seems a little long though, mine only takes about 1/8 - 1/4 mile at most.

The transmission starts in 2nd gear ( it's a 5 speed ). When cold, the 2nd to 3rd gear upshift is delayed. This is "normal" as it's supposed to get the catalytic converter up to operating temperature quicker. A delayed 3rd to 4th upshift should only occur on a hard acceleration.

Thanks guys! I just bought a 1996 sl 320 and the same thing is happening! I thought I had found "another" thing wrong with the car. Previous owner didn't take care of the car. I plan to do better! To show you guys how basic my knowledge base is and the level of detail I plan to attend with this car... can anyone tell me how to change out the front hood emblem on an SL 320?

Lemon.....As far as the cold shifting goes, I've found that my 320 needs to simply idle a few minutes (3?) before starting out to eliminate the problem. Strangely enough I had to replace my hood badge just a couple of months ago. You need to just pry it up CAREFULLY with a non-metallic tool that won't damage the paint....pry up the left or right side with your fingernail first to give yourself a starting point. There are two press-fit studs that are on the verticle axis that fit into holes in the sheet metal.
BTW....I'm a former Lawrenceville, GA resident before moving out here to a more relaxed way of living ![]()
