107 300 SL, what is this, winter mat or part of floor?

For a 1988 107 300 SL, what is this part (in the pictures)? Is it a winter floor mat, or is it an integral part of the floor? I found it under the passengers summer mat and, until removing it today, had assumed it was part of the floor system. I took it out today, but now am wondering if it's supposed to be there all the time.

mine doesent have that, im going with its a winter floor mat. Under my summer mats I have sound deadening material (stock) and a plactic air passage way for the HVAC system, removing that should not be a problem.

Looks like it's designed for the W201, not for the R107.

Thanks Y'all. Even though it fit perfectly, literally the exact same size and shape of the carpeted mat and the carpet and sound insulation under that, I'm going with the obvious and concluding it's the winter mat and can be removed. I'm assuming the 190E/201 part superseded whatever came before for the face-lifted 107. Too bad I only have the passenger side. I don't plan to use it, but hate to send it to recycling. If anyone can make good use of it, it's yours.

Mat for all seasons

Hi Michael

I think the origin of your 300SL is a clue, it's a Euro car is it not. This is almost certainly what is left of a pair of "winter" mats for the rain and mud in Europe. The drivers side probably got worn out through use (the dreaded accelerator heel wear plus you've a manual so that's both feet!) and thrown away and the previous owner just put it underneath the drivers side mat in case they had any passengers with muddy feet come aboard!

Suggest that you could do the same to protect your passenger footwell as I see you've been having "some rain" in the US recently!!

If not try a sale on eBay - some people will buy anything!

Cheers

Jim
