Oil Filter Copper Gaskets
I was changing the oil on my father's 89 560SL today, and I have run into a snag.
When I removed the oil filter canister a copper gasket came rattling out, but I am not sure where from. I have the replacement gasket that came with the filters, as well as several other that came in the baggie with the big black o-ring. Which copper gaskets go where, and how are they changed out? Of course I didn't notice the gasket in the oil catch until after I filled the car (before I started it). How many quarts am I likely to loose removing the oil filter with the rest of the fresh oil still in the car? |
You shouldn't loose more than the volume of the filter cannister, and unless you prefilled it or have since started it, probably none at all.

there is a copper gasket at both the drain plug and oil filter canister, however if it is not leaking , I would not worry about it, keep an eye on it however at intervals or just get an assistant , loosen canister while they hold i in position , quickly remove bolt place on copper gasket, retighten

Thanks. We will keep an eye on it and, if we see any leaks, try the quick switch.
