Why would I need this tool for my SL?
 

I still haven't gotten the owner's manual, and as I look around for info on the 380SL, I came across a tool kit that includes all the "must have" tools for the 107.045:

Just advertising. All of these are common tools. The tubular wrench I don't understand. If it takes 1/4" bits it will drive a 1/4" hex head. And with the addition of more bits it can drive larger hex heads.

Must have. As in "I must have your money!"

Those tools are at this point only of value for "completeness and originality" of the car, I would say that anything you could buy at Harbor Freight would be significantly better as a tool. I'm embarassed to say, I actually paid for a set...it's not worth it unless you have a super-original car.

I am with strife on this one, no need unless you are showing. The little open end metrics in those sizes are a must have ( get some good quality ones) you will use them alot

Here's a few picks of my rusty set, guess they could use some oil, don't look at them very often. They really are poor quality. does anyone know what the 10mm tubular wrench is for. I've not found a use for it.

Guess I totally misunderstood what that 10MM bar wrench was. My 560 does not have one so I am totally lost.

what is odd is the socket end is 10mm, while the hex end is 11mm, and marked accordingly???????????? There's a number on it, MB 0005813801.

I think they're for adjusting the zerks on the high-speed muffler bearing(s).:D

Just like everything else, my muffler bearings don't have any zerks either, must not have the high speed model.:( EPC lists it in the tool section, but doesn't say what it's for?????????

I had a KZ1000 for 10 years that had a wrench in the toolkit that I never used. Everything else was either obviously for a specific application such as spark plug or wheel bolt, but that one wrench was never touched. I can't remember what size it was now, but in all the years of doing all sorts of things to that bike, I never needed it. :confused:

I found the MB tools to be a good set in general, made for specific uses and not for professional wrenching. Used in that context they are fine.

I just couldn't figure out what the one tubular one is used to do.

It could be for the flight sweep rear deck lid hanger, but am not sure. :confused:

I have no idea what you are referring to.
It could be for the ejection seat module. It also might be for the headlight fluid recyclers.

Possibly used for tightening the valve cover bolts??? I know they are prone to loosening themselves occasionally, but you have to be careful not to overtighten them. The torque value is about 4n-m or 11 in-lb, IIRC. Just about "finger tight" or so...

I never thought about that as an application, because it wasn't really mentioned in the owner's manual. It's like owning a Ponton in the 1950s where they give you a 7mm Allen wrench for loosening the clamp that holds the wheel bearing on if you have to change/grease them after going through a lot of water.

If you didn't know that it was used for that, you'd wonder why you had it.

Unfortunately, no one outside the Forum knows about that, except some guy named Erfurt who lives in Stuttgart and used to pack the tool kits into the cars in the 1980s....

Ach! And Erfurt now has alzeimers so you have to take your car to him and put the tool in his hand. Then wait days and hope he will reveal the secret.
