Confused on Oil Capacity on my 72 SL 450
the manual says 8.25 liters with filter which is 8.75 quarts, but then in italics next to it , it reads 14.5 us pints which is 7.25 quarts - misprint or am I reading this wrong

My last change on the 74 took about 7.5 quarts. Are you sure that was US not imperial (british) measurements you were looking at?

got to agree with winecountry a US pint is 473.2ml which at 14.5 pints is only 6.86 liters but an imperial pint is 563.8ml which makes 14.5 pints 8.175 liters which is much closer to the 8.25 quoted. there are 946.4 ml in a US quart so 8.25 liters would be 8.73 US quarts as you say. has to be imperial pints

I thought about this some more, only cause I am bored .
8.25 (UK)imperial liters equals 14.5 (UK) imperial pints which equals 17.4 US pints, which is 8.7 quarts. If 7.5 q is the right fill , the book ( old haynes and old 107 MB manual) states 8.25 liters or 14.5 us pints, which must be wrong . Only way that works is UK to UK conversion. So how much is the right fill?

Seems like a lot of math to learn a capacity that can be simply found empirically. Eight quarts (US quarts) fills my '72 107 to the top line when I change the oil and filter. The small amount in the oil cooler is insignificant, but if you do drain it (that extra little copper gasket in your filter kit is for the cooler drain plug) you'll still only need 8 quarts. These cars have a whoppin' big oil capacity so being off a few ounces is not material. You'll see more difference when you check the level at various times after shutting off the engine. If you are between the lines on the dipstick, and not over-filled, you'll be fine. Don't sweat the small stuff. Whole other story when measuring ATF...that needs to be precise.
That said, I was deeply concerned about capacity the first time I changed oil in my 107 and for the same reasons...bought 9 quarts because it seemed right and only used 8. Next time I only had to buy 7 quarts. Put in 8, it'll be great...(hey, that rhymes!) 230/8 |
