Question MB Fuel Distributer (Rough idle/poor fuel economy)

Hi All
I just procured a 1987 560SL. It starts hard, and gets bad fuel mileage - less then 200 miles per tank. The shop has been working on it for several days. They now think it is the fuel distributor.
1. It looks like I will need a new one, as a used one, from my experience, will be almost as bad, as the diaphragm usually is the culprit, and as far as I know, no one has a kit for this. Any suggestions?
2. My research also shows, that they are not interchangeable??? Is this true?
3. The part, I am told is $2500 from MB, and about $500 from Bosch.

4. Any other recourse? Do I need to replace the EHA valve? And/or the o-ring(s)
Is this a job I can do? Or are there several adjustments with fine tuned, special tools?

Thanks for your help.
