Thinking of buying a 79/80 450SLC
Any tips or things to look out for that are problematic? I understand that these are rare so how hard are parts to come by on these?

It's true that there were fewer made than the SL, but also fewer people want them because they aren't convertible. If it's clean and rust free, and a deal, it would be a good car with easy to find parts. Most of the ones I've seen for sale on Craigslist, etc have been on there for a year or more.
If it's a '79 450slc with the 5.0 L engine; there were only 40 originally sold in the US, and only 1470 made. The parts would be harder to come by, but it's so rare and commands a premium. Here's a little about it. http://www.californiaclassix.com/archive/79_mb_rallyslc_c145.html |

The SLC is a great driving car, nothing special, unless it is a perfect example, Like the one my friend has

Or if it happens to be one of the few fully AMG modified SLCs. |

i found a car that the owner claims that it has the 5.0 motor. it is a 79'. how do i verify that it indeed is a 5.0? (kits were made i read somewhere to modify the 4.5 to 5.0)

The 4.5 engine would be a 117.985. The 5.0 should be a 117.960.
I have not verified it but I think the 450SLC 5.0 had the chassis designation of 107.026. |

The chassis number is also the VIN. Engine number is stamped into the top of the block behind the left (Dr side) head. some cleaner and a rag will probably be needed.

So that's where it is. No wonder I could never find it. What was MB doing, trying to hide it.

I have found it there on a '72, '73, '84 and '86.
Yours should have a 117.962 Werner. If you think that is bad..... I toured a Ford factory around 1990 or so. They were using a pin stamper to stamp the number into the rough casting on the side of the block. Looked at it right after it was stamped and could barely see it. Forget what I said. My memory sucks. The tube from the EGR runs right over the top of the block and you need a mirror to see the top of the block. A real PITA.
