Hard top installation

Guys-
Dumb question....How do you put the hard top on?

Obviously, two strong people on either side will put it on the car.

How is it done with the middle hole in the back and the turning handle behind the driver's seat? Is the handle supposed to be in a certain position first then the peg goes into the hole?

Someone will be looking at the car tomorrow and I need to know how to put the top on.

I guess I am asking for tips on how to do this smoothly. I can't 'practice' because there's only one of me in the house.

quite a dilemma

Wow. That's better than my reply. Here are the manual instructions.

I like the optimism that Mercedes shows in their pics of having the blonde removing the hardtop. My wife *****es everytime I suggest she help me put the top on or off - which is about once every five years.

OK, I have seen this done by people who have never done it. First thing you want to do is get two towels and roll them and rubber band them so you have a 3 inch diameter roll. These go on either side of the center rear pin. These are so you don't have to repaint the car.
Two guys hold the top while the THIRD guides the top. Remember there are 5 attachment points.

If you have not put the top on in a while then a little bit of vaseline or KY needs to be on the two above the windshield and the two by the doors. Having these turn easily and be in the correct rotation so that they fit down into the locking position will save you a lot of 4 letter words.
A 4th person small inside the cars is great. After you have done this a few times you will need fewer people.

Good luck , Go slow. Jack

I have scrolled through the forum and past threads, but can't find exactly what I need to know and that is;

I'm looking at purchasing a second hand hardtop for my 2004 Z4, which is optioned with the "hardtop preparation". The top is located some distance from where I live (approx. 1,000km), so I plan to drive there pop it on and drive back.

Is it that simple? Will I require any special tools to secure it or carry out any adjustments? How exactly does it lock in place at the rear locating pins and lock down on the front?

I think you may be fishing in the wrong lake, here. This is a site dedicated to Mercedes SL-class cars between 1973 and 1996. I'm not sure many people around here would admit to knowing anything about Bimmers. (BMWhat???) :rolleyes:
