smoke from my 560SL

so i just bought an '87 560SL on ebay, and literally as they're unloading it from the truck, white smoke is billowing from the exhaust. I let the car sit and run for several minutes, and still, billowing white smoke...

the owner claims that this has NEVER happened, and its because the gas, half full tank, is about a year old, so he's not driven it much at all. The truck driver, who picked up the car, said when he loaded it, it was FINE.

Curious what you all think.

thanks in advance

White smoke? But we already have a new Pope!
Seriously, that could be coolant. Check the radiator hoses, do they get all firm as soon as you start the car? Does the smoke smell like coolant? Could be a cracked head... Hope it is not for you...

didnt smell like coolant. it was literally as it was being taken off the car carrier for the first time to me.

it billowed for about 10-15 mins, and when i finally drove it, it went away, but it was a huge amt of smoke!!! could it be from old gas?

thanks

What was the temperature and humidity at the time? If it went away it was probably just condensation in the exhaust burning away. That does seem an excessive amount of time and smoke but if it doesn't continually happen I wouldn't worry. Another thing would be if the smoke was actually light blue. This would indicate valve seals.
