Problems at engine start - How to replace chain???
Mercedes, SL 560, from 1987, california style
Hello, I am in desperate need of help. My car broke down eventually and cannot be driven any longer... I recently had the camshafts changed as I dont know how old they were. The mechanic said it has to be done sooner or later as the lifter had some scratches on them. So we changed them. Problem then when I got the car back, the car was shaking terrible and made a bumpy noise when starting the engine. Stops after few minutes. I brought the car to someone else to get a second opinion. They only changed back 3 rockers, but the other ones were new!!!! Both mechanics dont know about this problem and said I should just drive the car. It will disappear. Well. After talking to some experts online, I was told to change the timing chain and the parts which come along with it. My car already has around 130 000 miles and it was said that timing chain needs to be replaced even before reaching that mileage. Now I would like to know if there is a step-by-step information officially or unofficially to find online how to do this work by myself and what tools are needed. I am not a mechanic, but lots of work can be done on a car like this by your own. I cannot find a mechanic here in this asian country who is willing to do this job. So I was thinking of trying it myself. But need assistance in it. I found here in this forum so far a self done work with another Mercedes, but different to my SL - W117. I hope there is something out there what could show me how to do that job. I need to buy the tools somehow. Thanks a lot |

hmm, the first thing you need to do is check chain stretch.
PeachPartsWiki: M116/117 Timing Chain Replacement is your start up a metal sound or simply an un-tuned engine?. If the cams were replaced , are you sure the chain cogs were put back right ( timing) ? not to be discouraging but If you have little car experience this is not a job to cut your teeth on (chain R/R)

Good point Ron. First determine if the cams were properly installed. Cam(s) mark alignment compared to 0 degrees on the crank at top dead center on #1 cylinder compression.
