1983 380 st tranmission problems

My niece's 380 sl trans has started to slip in both forward and reverse gears. The car is a beauty low miles florida car that she has driven for the last 3 years with no problems.
I checked the fluid and it was full but the fluid was not that dark red color. It was more like pink. No burnt smell.
She has to rev the engine to make the car slowly move forward then it flairs and slips when changing forward gears.
Car has 60 K miles.
-Do these symptoms point to a specific problem or is it time for an overall rebuild?
-Can you access the trans internals to see problems or must it be removed to see inside?
Any insight would be appreciated.
thanks
jz
