Unhappy Stupidity is my middle name

Stupid question of the day...
Sometimes more sometimes less.
I have a 1988 560SL. The trunk has been leaking for a while.

Now I had the rubber gasket replaced but DUHHHH I think the guy installed it upside down. The gasket faces up with the trough running upward towards the outside of the car. It is a thin gasket from Ecklers. Does the gasket face up or down? Trough up or down.

The new gasket was purchased here ( PeachPats)and is much thicker and appears to be better in all ways. I is however an INCO? I have read that these gaskets are sill not the best.Any info on that? I have ordered a plastic tool to displace the gasket and some gasket spray to dissolve the glue.

Also understand that the channel must be cleaned thoroughly.

As well, I have a leak in the front passenger side near the fuse box and ends up soaking the carpet on the passenger side. I can't find the leak as the tube for te AC is not clogged.

Please help the best you can as this is my last hurdle to get this car in very good shape.

God Bless the person that can help me. This is a long standing issue.

Imagine a cross section of the gasket to be shaped like the letter "C." The open part of the "C" should be facing toward the outside on all sealing surfaces. The thicker edge of the "C" should be glued to the car's body leaving the thinner part free to seal against the trunk lid.

Give it a go with the gasket you already have if you wish, but generally this is one of those times when OEM is definitely better.

Red face Trunk Seal

Let me restate what you said in order that I understand.

Once the old moulding is removed is it correct that the new moulding would fit in the track with the Open "C" portion facing towards the outside. This does not mean that the open"C" faces up. The moulding would glue down on its side and the trunk deck when closed would close the "C". Closing the two sides together.

Am I right? Many thanks for your help it is greatly appreciated.

You are correct. The open part of the "C" does not point "up," but rather toward the outside of the trunk area.
