85 Euro 280SL M110 Engine Compression
Hi,
I am seriously considering a 85 280SL Mercedes. I had the motor compression checked. The shop told me it was 170TP across all cylinders. Is the okay? Thanks, Morph |
The compression ratio is 9/1 on that engine & MB lists the warm cranking pressure at 10 to 12bar. And that converts to 150 to 180 psi.

compressionvalues for M110 1984 engine
Hi there
I recently purchased a 1984 280SL with (100 000 miles on the clock) and have carrried out a compression test (hot). The result i got is 10.5 bars on all 6 cylinders. Could somebody out there please tell me whether this is accpetable or is the engine sliding towards a major overhaul. I intend replacing the valve stem seals and any worn valves & guides in due course as it smokes like a demon when it is started up after standing. It also used approx 4 pints of oil on a high speed trip (80mph -130kph average speed) of 1000miles (1600km). This led me to believe that there may be piston/oil control ring problems. Any assistance / advice in this regard would be greatly appreciated. LMM |
