1983 500 SL. Knob release handle is not situating.

Good Morning. I have found me the small lever behind the larger one for the top release is not enuguaging anything. It seems to just spin freely. It does. It appear the c-clip has come off so Inassume the problem is behind the panel. Any advice before I look at it again? Thanks Nick
