$42K 350SL on BAT

I had thoughts of owning a 350SL 4spd but with prices trending like this maybe not.

Having two project 350sl plus a 350slc (all three 4 speeds) I sure am glad to see this. It’s taken a long time for people to start appreciating the very rare v8 manual trans mercedes.

I think I’m going to put anti-squat rear ends in all of mine to make the suspension feel more well planted because these cars rock forward and backwards too much when driving a manual trans, especially in the short wheel base R107.

When the time comes I think I will build a "Poor Man's 350SL" from an early 450SL. Mid 70's R107's in nice condition are very reasonable. Add Euro bumpers and lights. Maybe a 5.6 and 5spd. No smog here to contend with. Good point on the suspension. The 108/111's lack the anti-squat but the 109 has it.

I don't know how hard it is to install anti squat but for myself, I'd just shift smoother.

If you’ve driven both, I think you’d understand. The anti-squat rear end also includes anti-dive braking. Even after brand new shocks in my 68,000 mile 1973 450sl it was scary when I had to slam on the brakes with the rear end coming up and the nose diving really totally changing the dynamics of the vehicle. I believe the trailing rear control arm anti-squat was introduced with the 450sl, perhaps the w116, but it wasn’t available at all in the US cars until 1986. In the 107, the euro 450sl, euro 450slc, 450slc 5.0, euro 380sl (not the euro 380slc), 500slc, and 500sl all got the anti squat. I believe that after 1986, only the 560sl and 420sl got it. Jason Birch @rwd4evr just installed it in his 450slc 4-speed (from a 350) drift car now has the anti-squat rear end and I believe he can attest to the difference it makes. Why MB didn’t put it in the 350sl 4-speed cars, I don’t know. Perhaps it was because of a perception of trying to keep costs down on a manual transmission car. Also, there wasn’t an option code to get it installed, simply the chassis and motor determined it. Weird IMO.
