1984 500SL muffler replacement
 

My exhaust is shot. Probably a foolish question but can I replace the rear muffler with any 80's model SL muffler?

For the 380SL, the exhaust system parts are the same for 81-85 (USA spec).
The odds are pretty good that the 500 used the same rear section parts.
If yours has had catalysts installed some of the pipework is likely different.
Some of the 560 rear section may also be usable.

I have found the Timevalve website a useful resource for cross reference exhaust system.

Well, I bit the bullet and ordered a new stainless system from TimeValve. Expensive but I'll never need another one.
